I wish I would have brought more home. I like them too.

Here is one of the crab claws I found.

Just finished my first biscuit. Not sure if I am to blame for the extra small hole. Too bad.

Hey, that barnacle cluster is pretty cool, too.

I think you got a fossil of the month entry there

You have found nice sea urchins. Are they wet or polished ?

I had them soaking in water after using vinegar to help clean them. They are not polished, just wet.

There were much larger clumps that I wished I had grabbed. When covered in gray dirt, and small barnacles, I didn't think they were great specimens. Turns out they clean pretty easily, and look decent.

Thanks. I tried to do a happy dance at the end of the day hunting, but my back would not allow it. It was a fun day. You should book a trip with Gunther. At any time, they could dig into another sink hole, and start pulling out mammal stuff again.

I gained access to this quarry through the Lee County Fossil Club There are trips every week. I am thinking about going again to load up on barnacles.
SWFL Fossil club has access as well.

Got a chance to go into a materials quarry in SW Florida this weekend.
Collected a 5 gal bucket of the sand dollars. Got a few biscuits. The urchin was a gimme. I couldn't find an urchin all day, so one was pointed out to me just under my feet by the host. He either felt sorry for me, or wanted me to stop whining about not finding one. He found 7-8. It still took me a minute to spot it after the hot/cold game ended next to my feet. They were too camouflaged for me. My eyes are used to looking for black triangles, not balls of dirt.

I will be doing some reading to uncover the species. From what I am told, my bucket should contain 2-3 species of dollars, and possibly 2 biscuit species. Found a couple of small crab claws too.
I will also be researching cleaning techniques.
Ouch. I need a thimble.

:PChuck - NICE HAUL!
I'm gonna have to come back down and visit again! Of course, we need to start drilling off the coast of Florida so that work will fly me out...

The crab claw seems a Calappa sp. dactylus.
