So, I haven't been able to get out much lately, with working 6 days a week, and mostly overnights, at that. But, I've managed to get out a few weeks ago, and then again today, as well as Saturday. Luckily, found a few keepers every time. It definitely feels good when you find that one piece that makes you feel like the trip was worthwhile. Anyway...

So, a few weeks ago was pretty uneventful. Oh, except this...

except!

Figures...my first mos vert, and it's half a mos vert. Oh well...

Saturday, I ended up running across a fellow member of the forum. He didn't quite say WHICH member, but I have my suspicions :P. The highlight from this trip would be a Squatina tooth, in very nice shape. There were a couple other nice finds, but this one definitely made my day, being the first Squatina I took home (since my first actual find was accidentally dropped out of my shirt pocket and back into the Ram).

Then today was strictly a sifting day, since I'd just combed the banks two days earlier. Started slowly, but eventually found a few really nice pieces.

First, a nice posterior...probably either kopingensis or appendiculata.

Second, my first definite borodini (I think? haha). Unfortunately, part of the root is gone, and the tooth is pretty worn. I may have found a second, but the labial protuberance is completely worn off, so I'm hesitant to call it. There's one I've had for a while that I've always thought may be, but is probably far, far too large.

Lastly, my first baculite segment. It's quite large, and very (VERY) worn, but I'm happy with it.

I also have a few ID questions, but I'll grab pics of them another time...it's late.

Anyone else make it out there this past weekend?

Thats a nice vert even if its only half. I was heading up that way tuesday. Maybe I can find the other half.

Try using something for scale in your pictures.

You know, it may seem drab when you dont find much, I almost had that today, would have matched about 5 other days this month. However, some trips though you wont find a lot of stuff to cherish, you may find one or two like you have and Im guessing you already have a bit of a collection,,,,,,,be proud of those finds. Some things you find half of, and its a give away, but some are pretty darn cool still. Like your vert. And those teeth are like none I see and would love to own. What area is this you go to, city and state please lol?

Well I liked the pics and the vert being almost black is real cool, most all the bone here is brown. Well, nice little finds if you ask me, you know as well as I that its like playing slot machines. I think you still won some.

Yea, I'd definitely forgotten to add something for scale. I was more concerned with messing around with camera settings, lighting, and photo editing and completely forgot. Perhaps I'll do a group shot when I get the pictures of what I need ID'd.

And Jason, generally it's a rare day when I don't find something to make the trip worth it. I've gotten much more selective in what I bring home, so I never expect to come home with handfulls of material (though I easily could if I took every broken or tiny tooth I came across!). Don't misunderstand, I'm certainly not complaining...these are some of my favorite finds I've made down there, especially the Squatina tooth.

As for location, it's a well-known Cretaceous site in Holmdel, NJ. If you're interested in some teeth, PM me. I have more than I know what to do with at this point, and may be interested in a trade or something.

I was thinking the same thing John. It would be nice to see something in the picture for scale though.

Hey Bob. That side hole maybe the clue to what it is. Hummm could be another part towards assembling my monster if I get Phil to cough up the teeth. LOL

I'm never going to make the Ram today. My back is killing me and by the time I get going it will be too late to leave. :~(

Agreed. It doesn't look like a worn mosasaur vertebra.

If I find that skull we may need some of those giant Mos teeth to fill it out.

Nice to hear from you phil. You must have a giant collection of shark teeth from Fla by now.

I'd figured since it had that hole in the middle, it'd be a vert...so what are my options. I'll try to get something in for scale, but until then, it's about 1 1/4" long, and the broken side is about the same (when whole would have probably been about 2" across). Along the break is about 1". So, in my imaginary world, it would put the piece at about 1 1/4" long, 2" wide, and 1" tall. So it seems a bit squat. What are my other options? What else would have a foramen that large?

Phil, where are you moving to this time? Don't tell me you're going to be cleaning out the Texans, next. Perhaps Mississippi? Or Kansas...poor, poor Kansas :P

Ahhhh...ok. I miss the South. Spent 7 years in Huntsville, AL. The place was nearly literally made of fossils!

Perhaps one day, I'll move back.
