I am so glad to have found this site! I am originally from northern Illinois and got addicted to fossils when I accidentally discovered the "mother lode" at Mazon Creek while fishing. Shortly after my hobby began, I moved to West Kentucky (several bucket loads of unopened concretions took up space in the Uhaul- can you blame me?). I have a pretty good collection of Mazon Creek fossils and love to identify them as I open them. I'm hoping to go back there soon and replenish my stock- it's been 7 years. While here in Kentucky I've been rockhounding wherever I can but after the riches of Mazon Creek I'm left somewhat disappointed. Corals are common but I've found very large pieces that decorate my landscaping. Geodes are a new interest - just last week I have found over a dozen but haven't opened them yet. I first found pieces of geodes in a creek bed and put 2+2 together- as you can tell I'm just an amateur and this is how I've learned about rocks. While looking for geodes I found what I think is a fish fossil- could be a plant- I'm not sure. I thought it was unusual to find an impression of this sort in West Kentucky. I will post a picture of it soon and plan on returning to the area that it was found to look some more. The geology of the area seems so diverse and alien to me so I could use help with understanding the fossil timeline. I look forward to reading up and posting my finds for ID, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, it's not impossible to find fish remains in western KY, but it is very uncommon. I also live in KY, Louisville and have several friends who can also help Identify your find. I will be happy to try if you send me a picture. Best wishes and good hunting.

Welcome from Pennsylvania. I left a long time house behind in Florida a couple years ago that featured a rock walkway with Kentucky Geode borders <I estimate about 5000 pounds of them collected over a period of five years>. They came from four different location each with their own unique mineralization: one site was quartz, one was calcite and quartz, one calcite and the fourth not actually geodes at all, but agate nodules. Wonderful stuff. I've also collected fossils from several locations, criniods and brachiopods primarily but I have three or four different types of coral as well. Anyway, welcome to the Forum, look forward to seeing pictures of your finds.
