I think the two holes in the jaw are where the tusk would have been. B) B) B) :)

Thanks,
The thing is that it did not seem long enough to be a Croc or Gator jaw. It is very thick. I will have to get better photos.

There are actually four holes on the outside that go to two holes on the inside. I thought two might be nostrils but could not figure out the other two.

I am not sure but I think some of those amimals did have little tusk on the bottom jaw. I'll try to look it up . Some one will let us both know I am sure. If it is what I think it is it sure is a small one. B) B) B) :)

(Gomphotherium maybe)

You can see ridges on the inside of the jaw. I thought it was where small teeth went but it looks like a Mastodon root would fit in. It would have been very small though.

These two show the two holes on the outside of each side.

From the inside you see the two holes that attach to the four on the outside. On the right you see the ridge where the tooth would have gone.

Thanks for the Help on this. It is pretty cool.

LOL... I did not mean it that way. I would rather find a 3" Mako than a 5" Meg.

Absolutely mastodon. I think the holes on the inside are for blood supply and nerves.

I thought the one tooth that he found was gomp, but again, not an expert. So perhaps the jaw could be too.

I keep most of them but sell some to keep my diving habit going. For me the hunt is the most exciting part. Owning them is secondary.

Thanks,
Any idea why there are four holes on the outside? This was a lower jaw section correct?

These photos are from one of my favorite finds. In Sept '08 I found this Mastodon tooth in a section of Jaw bone.

The two holes in the center would have been the tusks. Baby mastodons had tusks that eventually fell out. The holes to the side of the tusk holes-I'm not quite sure why they go all the way through. My mastodon jawbone has those too. You can see it in the photo attached. It could be gomphothere, but I don't know enough about gomphs to say. The tooth in the first post does look to be gomphothere.
