I wounder if that animal was an unborn calf and was a by product of the killing of it's mother. I say that because of it's small size what do you think? B) B) B) :)

I suppose it could be possible, but after seeing how small some of the teeth get, the small size of the jaw seems appropriate to me. There are mammoth teeth on the market that are less than 3/4" tall including the roots.

The little mastodon jaw I found is only about 16" total length and it was a very young amimal. So with a jaw length of only a little over 6" it must have been real young. Here are some quick pictures of mine. The milk (spit) tooth is the only tooth missing in this jaw. B) B) B) :)

These photos are from one of my favorite finds. In Sept '08 I found this Mastodon tooth in a section of Jaw bone.

That is one of the coolest things I have seen. Did you find that in a river. It is amazing. I assume the teeth were with the jaw? Unreal!!!

Bill . . .

I don't think this is an elephant mandible. Consider dugong.

That is interesting. I do not find much dugong material here that I know of. What are the holes for if not tusks?

I always trust Mr. Pristis. There are some pics at the link below (1139 and 1140). They are small but seem to show the four holes. Very interesting.

P.S. I guess I jumped the gun saying Mastodon. Live and learn.

Bill, I think Harry got it I never even thought of dugong that would account for the size. Thanks Harry. B) B) B) :)

Mr. Pristis, what tipped you off that it was dugong-just the size, or are there certain traits you look for?

That looks exactly like what this is. Thanks for the ID assistance. It is a pretty cool piece.
Thanks again,
Bill

Bill, the loose elephant tooth that you found is gomph, not mastodon.

Please, Nick . . . . . "Mr. Pristis" was my father. Just call me "Captain Marvelous." :D

How did I lean in the direction of dugong? Small teeth, massive jaw, large foramina, the curve of the jaw, etc. ...Just experience, I guess. You can call it intuition if you define intuition as the synthesis of all one's accumulated experiences applied to a new situation. . . . . . And then I looked at a line-drawing in a book.

I can't explain it any better than that.

Mr. Captain Marvelous
In the years that you have helped me, going back to the Yahoo board, you have always been right on. I appreciate the latest ID.
