well, i find myself quite surprised over the sensitivity and debate over an issue that i thought was very much a routine point. it is never my intent to dampen enthusiasm, so please remain enthusiastic.

Great ideas often receive violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I have an open mind but it's closed for repairs.

Most forums from year to year lock all old posts and place them in an archives, to me this is where old posts belong because their are thousands which are really unnecessary and really do not need to be resurfaced. If it were up to me it would be a time lock or archive system.

Well personally I don't mind old topics being resurfaced as long as they are fossil relevant threads. And sometimes too its ok for a intro post if its someone you know but then you have the problem of everyone thinking there's a new guy all over again because no one reads the dumb posts.

[QUOTE]...the last thing you want to do is to discourage enthusiasm. [/QOUTE]

Agreed.

This issue, like a couple of others, are being discussed because there are not greater issues to contend with, at least IMHO. A couple of serious trolls, a few hackers, a dicey server, members arguing over nothing...that kind of thing gets everyone's attention and will bury any complaints about re firing - up old threads.

Seriously, it just isn't that big a deal, even if someone gives a fresh cheerful welcome to someone who dropped out of the forum back in the cretaceous. Worst case they realize that later and feel a little silly. Best case they never know they did that. :D

Nicholas,

I don't know what what other forums do. I'm not the kind of guy who joins clubs, tending to do my own thing but isurus90064 told me about this one and the topics being discussed (threads that are now old to you) and I thought, "I should check that out." I joined in March and went back through several interesting exchanges and added some comments sometimes citing relevant literature. If I had activated some warning flag (saying words to the effect of "You are attempting to reply to an expired thread - please do something else), that would have been frustrating/irritating to me. It never occurred to me that I was unleashing zombies. I thought of it more like reopening an old quarry. It seems there is a growing number of members who would like to be able to do that here from time to time as well.

Time locks. Archive systems. Are we having too much fun?

I think we should bring this back up in a year or two so new members know not to do so! :D

I am very glad you did!

You get it! That's the reason old topics are kept open; they are an evolving archive of topical information :)

I began to write regularly on this forum a little more than a year ago, so I like when old important (and unknown to me)topics are resurrected. Most of the time topics go down not because they are not relevant, but because people forget about them. ;)

Yes, Nando, and sometimes they go largely unnoticed when a given category gets a lot of new threads within a short time. I've missed some interesting threads when I was on the road or busy at home for more than a few days. When I had free time again, I went back a few pages to see what went by in my absence.

I like that there are old threads several pages long (MB's "Crabs Fever" and Harry's "Pathologies" threads come to mind). They have become "one-stop-shops" for discussions of popular and interesting topics. Old threads like those may go dormant for a month or more, but as the forum continues, more members can recall and bump them with fresh information and/or perspective.

I have gone all the way to the beginning of a couple of categories and worked my way page-by-page just to see what was back there and I found a few threads that seemed to have ended not because there was some kind of resolution (question and complete answer; question and multiple possibilities offered when the question had no easy answer) but because perhaps few of the usual responders answered the call whether because they simply missed it the first time or they weren't members when the question was originally posed. Some old threads from 3-4 years ago deserve another look because they bring up lesser-known/lesser-seen fossils that might not be directly addressed in a new thread anytime soon.

I'm glad a lot of members have commented in this thread and equally pleased that the forum administration has not followed through with what other forums have done which is arbitrarily limiting the newbies' participation in the history of a forum they have found fun and informative. I know there are other fossil forums and some people belong to more than one but I prefer to contribute to one that follows the will of the people rather than seeking to exclude people one way or another.

Jess
