So im a little unsure where to start out, i guess im going to write this all down to try and gather my thoughts and update my progress, Im aiming to become competent enuf in fossil prep to be able to get a paid full time job in something im massivley intrested in. Currently ive got boxes and boxes of uk fossils, mostly ammonites. They all need prepping too. Seems the ideal place to start, but first i need the equitment. Check, well sort of ive got a compressor and a st pen tho its in storeage and about 300 miles away. When i did use it ive found it nearly impossible to clen anything up, so the next step is to get a TT pen orderd. money permitting i shuld have this by the end of this month.

On a slightly unrelated not......ive got all these ammonites and would happily trade them for other fossils so i can get some slightly diffrent things to prep. Secondly im in the UK , so anyone wanting to come over hear to hunt let me know as ive got some sweet spots whear ive found an icthysaur and ammonite about 18inches across. I will add pics some time but they are in storeage too at the moment.

Even the UK is a pretty big place. Where abouts are you so anyone visiting will have an idea if they can arrange a meeting? My fossil gathering area is along about 30 miles of riverbank in Northern Alberta and it takes about 5 hours to drive there, get on a river jet boat and make our way to the 'honey spot' We collect mostly ammonites too.

Hi Johnny,

Good luck with following your dream of being a professional fossil preparer! I'm trying to learn a bit about the craft but am just beginning with Green River Fish kits and the 'scratch and blow' method of cleaning them. The gear you need is pretty expensive, wishing you a prosperous year so that you can get what you need:) Keep blogging, I want to know how this turns out:)

Ive been away for a little time as money came up short buying new equitment-my boiler heating system blew up so been paying for that. However its all sorted now so i can get back on track. Ive just paid for a new TT air pen and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. Hopefully this week it should arrive. Once its hear i can have a go at some of these ammonites ive got in the workshop.

For anyone wanting to come here for fossil hunting my main area is lyme regis area of the south coast of the UK. its a good place with some rare but large ammonites to be found, ive not been out much this year due to work and i now live several miles away to boot

everything has arrived and in good orderr too. had a go with it all and seems to run very well indeed. Ive found that most of the ammonites i have are not coming out and simply bursting as i do them tho i did has one small succsess, not too ad for a first go. currently i cant collect due to work so if anyone knows some good sales places i can get some un prepped stuff that would be great.

Ive been tinkering away in the workshop for a few weeks now, slowly im improving butstill realy struggling to get anything out to a high standard or even to a good standard. My first set of ammonites, around ten i managed to literaly break into hundereds of pieces. Now with some more practice ive got 6 out of 10 out with out too much damage. so improvement in some areas.

In order to improve ive been watching youtube for any info there but not coming out with too much info sadly. Im going to see if i can get a lesson or two from the place where i got my pen, they have said thre more than happy to do that. Whitch is great news in fact they reccomended i come for a little demo, great customer service from a guy called ken mannion.

Unfortunatley i live on a island in the middle of nowhere whitch has zero fossils on it, currently i have no ammonites to hand to work on so im looking to buy if anyone is selling anything. I will put some pics up of the work thats done so far.
