Alethopteris Of Saint Clair

Alethopteris are quite common at Saint Clair location. But apparently there are at least 6 different species.

These are all from "Fossil Plants from the Anthracite Coal Fields of Eastern Pennsylvania."

A zip file that contains the PDF can be downloaded from http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us.

THey are quite cool! I am a fan of plants - recent and prehistoric. I don't find many that quality :D Good job!

Great post!!! And to think my St Clair ferns were all the same. Now I am going to have to un-store them and scrutinize them even more. Any suggestions on fern ID sites?

I wanted to put the Alethopteris examples from the book somewhere for comparison purposes, but realize I didn't quite complete my effort the other day. Sorry about that.

Thanks, Minnbuckeye. I haven't been to the site yet. But am planning on stopping there this spring.

Thanks for a great post on St. Clair! My husband works at Cabela's in Hamburg a couple weekends out of the year and sometimes I go along. I am thinking St. Clair is not much more than 20 minutes from Hamburg! I do think I will be going on a day trip next time he goes to Cabela's!

Can you possibly give me some GPS coordinates or a location on where to go in St. Clair? Sometimes I dread a weekend in Hamburg but I think this changes everything!! Thanks!
