Always a fan of this shell for some unknown reason. Have I also seen it in the Goose Creek?

    Hi Don

I have collected only one Goose Creek location, on the Great Pee Dee, so I don't have a lot of experience with it, although I would like to.  In his 1994 Yorktown publication, Campbell lists S. ernestsmithi only from the Waccamaw and the Caloosahatchee.  It is very similar to Strahlopecten caloosahatcheensis which he lists as co-occurring with S. ernestmithi and with a little broader temporal range down into the Tamiami.  If I had to guess, maybe what you are seeing is Nodipecten peedeensis which he does list in the UGCL.  I have a single valve from Bed 11 Tamiami which I have tentatively identified as N. peedeensis which now I am having doubts as he lists this species only from the UGCL.  I'll post some pictures of these other species in the gallery when I get a chance.

    Mike

The "ernestsmithi" I'm remembering was usually in the aragonite leached basal beds (with the abundant echinoids) on top of the Peedee at Shallotte. Have been told that these beds are Goose Creek LS. Am sure I've seen them at Old Dock also but can't remember if in the aragonitic beds or the leached base. Looks like I am confusing the two taxa in my uncritical observations.
