Fossils from Switzerland

Fossils from Switzerland

In this album I want to show some fossils from the quarry Schümel near Holderbank and from another quarry near Liesberg.

They are both in Switzerland and I wasnt often there but at the quarries you can find many beautiful fossils and they are very nice places !

At the quarry near Holderbank you can find various fossil from the "Birmenstorf-Member" (about 15 milion years old). For examplem you can fiind many brachiopods, ammonites, corals and sometimes small shark teeth and sea urchins. Its good after rainy periods !

At the quarry near Liesberg you can find different fossils from the lower oxfordium, like corals, crinoid stems and sometimes also sea urchins. In the "Renggeri-Ton" you can find beautiful pyritized ammonites !

It's really a nice quarry or?! Did you find much? Probably better things than I? ;)

I worked the detritus from the steep slope on the south edge.  The oolithitic layer.  Lots of ammonites in there.  Not easy prep.  One time when I was there there were some guys rapelling (absailing) down from the top chipping away at that face for big ammonites.  I have another site nearby for urchins but last time I was there (two years ago) it was completely overgrown.  I once saw a couple of chamois at that site... totally unexpected and very exciting.  I had no idea there were chamois in the Jura.

That sounds very interesting ! Can I see your finds somewhere?

Too bad that you cant find anything at the other location now. That would be interesting, because I love urchins and in my area I cant find many ^_^

Is the Schumel quarry open to the public?

Yes it is. There is even an information board about the fossils. the landscape and the animals:

Interesting sign.  My German is mediocre but it looks like this is an amphibian sanctuary of some sort. Last time I went to Liesberg, they had a similar sign.  Yay for the amphibians.

I do not thin I have any photos of my Swiss stuff, but I can try to take a few pix in the next few days.  Feel free to remind me, as I tend to forget.

Oh I am sorry that was the information board in Liesberg  Yes there is an amphibian spawning ground.

But in Holderbank is a similar board ... although I dont have pictures ^_^

I will pm you tomorrow ! Thanks !

Ah, yes, I see the Basel Landschaft symbol on the bottom right.  The second quarry seems to be in Solothun.  My family is from the Delemont area.

Its a bit confusing :D

The picture of the information board is from the quarry near Liesberg in Solothurn. But its near to the canton "Basel-Landschaft".

The other quarry is in "Aargau" but its also near to Basel.

Ok so I assume that you had lots of chance to hunt there :envy::)

I have been there three times, maybe.  It is on my list of things to do when I go visit family, even since my aunt took me there in 1993.  Are your ammonites and urchin above from Liesberg or the other quarry?

If you click on the pictures you can see additional informtion like the location ;)

The pyritized ammonites are from Liesberg and the other fossils, like the urchin are from the quarry Schümel near Holderbank.
