Russian Upper Oxfordian ammonites

Russian Upper Oxfordian ammonites

Late Oxfordian sites are located not far from Moscow (e.g. by Bronnitsy) as well as some other regions like Kostroma (Mikhalenino) and Yaroslavl (Yoda) Oblasts.

Ammonites in Moscow region Amoeboceras alternoides and Amoeboceras serratum zones sometimes feature nacreous pyritization that makes them a sought-after prize for collectors. Body chambers and usually outer whorls do not get pyritized and preserved as imprints at best. The fossiliferous layer is situated below Moskva river level and is available only in winter.

The most numerous genera are Amoeboceras (late Cardioceras with keels), Euaspidoceras(M)/Mirosphinctes(m), Subdiscosphinctes and Arisphinctes
