Tool for working bone

Harry Pristis

A chert tool made from Coastal Plains Chert. Uniface tools are commonly Paleo-Indian, but this one may be a bit later (Early Archaic) based on associated artifacts. This flake tool was knapped on all edges. It may have been used on bone, antler, or hide of Pleistocene hold-over animals such as horse or tapir. Or, it may have been used to fashion wood implements.

Notice how the bulb of percussion fits the palm of a hand. The graver spur has been sharpened by bevelling two sides of the tool.
