Biface Flake Knife

Harry Pristis

This is a biface flake knife from the Santa Fe River in North Florida. It is almost certainly Paleo or Early Archaic in age. Judging by the lack of wear, I don't think it was used to butcher holdover Pleistocene megafauna. I think this knife is more likely to have been a hunter's hold-out weapon - probably carried in his boot - while hunting with spears or darts. Butchering would have been carried out using more substantial choppers and single-use flakes. (Just kidding about the boot.)

Ben Waller collected this one decades ago. After any unproductive dive in the Santa Fe, I would shrug my shoulders and tell my dive-buddy, "Ben must have worked this stretch of river!" But, you're right there is still amazing stuff there.
