    Monte Bolca near Verona

    Italy

Apogon is a large genus of Cardinalfishes with currently more than 200 described species. Cardinal fishes are nocturnal. During the day, they mostly hide whereas at night, they feed on zooplankton. Many of these fishes live at depths of 200m and more and thus are rather poorly known. Most cardinalfish species are mouth brooders, this role being performed by the male. Great fish for a sea water aquarium!
