big2th Posted March 14, 2011 You're spot on, location-wise. Yes, it was found in Aurora. It measures 3.38" long and a little more than 2.5" wide. Link to comment
big2th Posted March 14, 2011 Very Nice teeth! Where were the two teeth found? This is the same tooth (front and back). I found it in the PCS Phosphate mine in Aurora, NC. Link to comment
big2th Posted March 15, 2011 Greatest Mako ever found!! You're very kind (as always) Peter. Let's just say that it's the best mako that I have personally found. I'm sure that there are nicer ones out there (and I always get a thrill in seeing others' superb finds). Link to comment
greel Posted March 23, 2011 I went into the mine the trip after you found this behemoth tooth. The air was still abuzz about your find. If John Everett says its the biggest mako that he has ever seen found there, you know it is a truly legendary tooth. I agree with Mexx - greatest mako ever! I'd love to someday hear the story of how you found it (ie fully or partially exposed, did it register in your mind as a meg at first glance, etc..) - a heroic tooth like this deserves a story kind of like Beowulf! John's a great guy and a super legendary collector, too. I actually thought it was a small megalodon at first. I saw the root exposed with a small part of the enamel from about ten feet away. As I approached and got closer, I was surprised to see no serrations! When I slowly pulled it out from the material, it was pleasantly obvious that it was indeed a mako. While I have been fortunate to have found 3" + makos before, this one tops them all for me and I am most grateful! Link to comment
