Prolyelliceras sp.

Fossildude19

" Peruvian Ammonite".

I purchased this while on vacation, this past July, at a small rock shop in Bar Harbor, Maine.
For 5 dollars, I couldn't pass it up. I love ammonites, but don't own many at all.... ,... well, not as many as I would like.
ID based on internet searches - tag just said "Peruvian Ammonite". Any help with ID appreciated.

Could be either Asteroceras obtusum or Prolyelliceras sp.

I'd agree with the ID Tim. That's a very interesting specimen, I've never actually seen one quite the same, over in England we find Asteroceras fairly commonly, but they are always preserved in Calcite not Pyrite, which this one appears to be? Nice acquisition!

Joe,

Not really sure on the preservation - it's black and fairly hard... I guess it could be a type of pyrite preservation - some of my roller trilos are black like this... and preserved as pyrite, underneath the black layer...

Thanks for the confirmation on ID. :)

Regards,
