Garfish Mandible

Harry Pristis

This complete left mandible was recovered from a Native American kitchen midden in Volusia County, Florida. It is mineralized, but is likely to be only about 5,000 years old (plus or minus a couple of thousand).

This jaw is from a very large garfish, certainly larger than any I've seen in my years of exploring Florida rivers.
