deer ulna tool

Harry Pristis

These deer ulna tools ("trigger awl") are relatively common in Florida habitation sites, particularly in kitchen middens.

There would have been any number of uses for tools with a natural handle such as these bones provide. There has been a suggestion that some were used as tattooing tools. I have heard a suggestion that they may have been used as daggers. It is safe to call them "awls."

Here is one that apparently was not used as an awl -- it has a spatulate end. This one is dark because it is a river find.
