ShipWorm

jpevahouse

Crosswicks Creek is similar to Big Brook in that it cuts deeply into the same Cretaecous strata which runs north south from the north eastern shore of NJ south westward down to South Jersey near Camden. The well known Ellisdale site is located along Crosswick Creek Monmouth County. It is significant in that it contains remains of late dinosaur and early mammal bones at a time just before the extinction of the dinosaurs. The NJ State Museum hold a sizeable collection of bones from this site.

The trace fossil pictured shows the boring of ship worms in the mud of a salt water marsh about 70 million years ago.
