Osteopleurus newarki (coelacanth)

Late Triassic

Lockatong Formation

Newark Supergroup

Granton Quarry

North Bergen, NJ

First coelacanth fossil I found at Granton- Thanksgiving Day 2013. Ended up with a wicked case of poison ivy, but that didn't stop me from going back.

From the album:

Triassic

Is the skull there on the right, Jeff?

That's a nice one, to be sure.

Tim;

It appears to be. As you can see it's covered with a thin layer of shale. No telling for sure what's underneath, unless, say the shale covering were to be removed. Who knows, could be a complete fish.

Regards,

Jeff
