Kit flexi02

billheim

I mass-produce these four Flexicalymene sp. trilobites for my fossil club. One is from a mold I made from a real Flexicalymene meeki that I found and own (leftmost). I think I'll take a side-by-side photo of the original and the replica for comparison. The other three are made from one of the remaining casts from the previous couple who made them for our group to sell before they passed away. We greatly appreciate their efforts over the years and still miss them.

I made new molds from the casts by first spraying the plaster with clear Krylon to create a non-stick surface. A made a box the right size for the trilobite from cardboard and used 2-part RTV Silicone Rubber to make 50 molds, which is how many casts I planned to make out of one batch of plaster. Concerned that I might wear out the original plaster casts, I made some resin casts using my first molds and used those resin casts to make more rubber molds.

Now I can use 20 fluid ounces of plaster (before water) to make 50 trilobite casts. The coloring is spray paint I apply in bulk. First dark brown and then the lighter dark taupe and wipe off the excess lighter taupe paint.

Nuff Said?
