Another Ichthyosaur tooth from the lower Jurassic of Holzmaden / quarry Kromer.

Its about 1.3 cm long and has a very nice root !

Not hat many ;)

Until now I have found about 30 - 35 Ichthyosaur teeth in Holzmaden. (in the last two years)

So, how often do you visit the quarries? As I've been there about 10 times now, not a single tooth, crocodilian or other...

Sadly there is only one quarry in thea area of Holzmaden left, which is closed during winter (and now closed because of covid). There occurs a very hard layer with many small fish bits where teeth are a bit more common. I guess I was already about 200 times in that quarry. And I think I have almost the same number of prepared teeth from there.

Okay, at least I've been looking in and for the right layer, then... Thanks!

 

With that being the layer to search, I guess it all depends on whether they recently dumped some new material or not. Actually, the first time I visited the quarry, now a couple of years ago, they had just dumped new material from that layer. And this is the first and last time I found some fish jaw in tbe quarry...
