Horse Age by Tooth Wear

Harry Pristis

As a horse ages, its teeth wear. To compensate for this wear, adult cheek teeth are pushed further out of the bone at a rate of about 1/8 inch per year. No new enamel is laid down. This tooth movement keeps a functional set of teeth in place until the teeth are completely worn out. At that point, the horse has to take liquid food through a straw.
