It certainly is tough. I've never found any dinosaur material in my four trips to the brooks. It took me that long to even find a semi-decent mosasaur tooth (although it was split in half just my luck).

I have been doing this for a somewhat long time now and it is so ****ing difficult to find reptile or dinosaur material. Luck has a big role in it but you can try to counterbalance luck by going as many times as possible. The longest hunt I have ever done in NJ was 11 hours and this winter, when I come back from college, I want to try to get a 12 hour hunt in. I am going to need coffee for that. It takes me an average of 18.5 hours to find anything reptile, even just a fragment of a mosasaur tooth. The best time to go is after a big rain; if this is the case you are around 4x more likely to find a mosasaur tooth; that estimate is based solely on my own hunting. Anyway, if you can make it out here we could go on a hunt and test our luck on acquiring that beloved reptile material. 

That sounds great. What is the temperature like in Jersey in the winter? I'm guessing a bit more tolerable than New Hampshire.

The temperature typically ranges from 25 to 40 this time of year. That is just a guess though, and it sometimes gets much higher or much lower depending on the year. I am addicted to fossil hunting and going to school in Ohio really does not help. This winter I am going to Thailand but may be able to get in a few hunts before I go. My fall break was 7 days and I manage to go fossil hunting 4 of those days. I wish we both lived in South Carolina or one of the southern states since they have it easy. New Jersey hunting conditions are difficult but they do not compare to the paucity of fossil material in Connecticut or New Hampshire. 

I know what you mean, I feel like I live in a barren wasteland when it comes to finding fossils. There are no fossil sites within a 40 mile radius it seems. I always have to travel to find them and the temperature would not help even if they could be found closer to home. That's the plight of the granite stater; we may not have a sales tax but we have no fossils either.
