This young, possibly ephebic, corallite had a very deep attachment area on bottom. This rapid upward growth may have occurred in response to—you guessed it: Sinking in the mud.

I have seen similar behaviors in Scleractinia button corals, developments in height due to the need to escape burials.

Also regenerations from fragments in Scleractinia discoidal corals similar to another of your specimens.
