We found this jaw bone about 2 ft in depth around a pond that was dug out. I looked up raccoon which seemed to be obvious but it doesn’t have any front teeth. Can you help out by identifying? Thank you. I’m pretty sure it’s not very old. I'm just having a hard time identifying it. Thank you.

Hi again from Essex, I have found on our beaches around Clacton many pieces of sea floor following the recharge of these beaches with all types of shell remains in them but I cant find any reference on line as to what these inclusions once were or a related date, the first two seem to be in very hard sand stone while the third looks to be in a mud stone, any help would be much appreciated, many thanks

I’m wondering what the age of the Otodus teeth are in Morocco. Does anybody have any papers on the teeth there? Also, does anybody know how many genera there are there? Thanks

Found this what I believe to be a partial trilobite about 10 years ago on the Dead River Basin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula after a dam broke and there was a flood. I'm curious to identify it positively as a trilobite as I was told it it was. To age it. And I know you don't appraisals but I'm curious if it might be worth something. I tried to take pictures according to the directions if there's something better I can do please comment. Thank you in advance.

Hi! Ive just noticed that many people says different things when it comes to the time when platecarpus Lived. Many would say "84-81" million years ago, but some said it even lived till 73 million years ago. What would you consider is the correct answer?

The shark relative is genus of eugenodontia holocephalid from the Carboniferous-Pennsylvanian age Anna shale formation, Carbondale group, found in different Illinois coal mines. I dont know(yet)which mine these were found in. This unidentified species is of the "vorax-serratus- crenulatus-heinrichi" or "E. heinrichi group", with the teeth being more of a standard triangular shape, as opposed to being thinner and pointed at a forward angle as in the "E. minor" group http://www.thefossilforum.com/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=501751 -

My father dug this piece of petrified wood from a riverbed outside of Texarkana Arkansas approximately 25 years ago. He passed away in 2009 so I never got any more information from him regarding it. My question is how would I go about polishing it or just sealing it from the climate? The crystals are what I'm concerned about with the idea of polishing it.

Hello, all. I am from Maryland but grew up in Sarasota, Florida. I collect Shark's teeth (mostly are from Venice Beach). I am not very experienced at identifying them, though I have a good collection. I decided to join the community because I have had 2 large shark's teeth for quite a long time and want to identify them and get an idea (if possible what they are worth). My Daughter called over with the 4 month old Grandson dressed in a Dinosaur jumpsuit wanting some photos. So not letting a chance go by I thought time to start getting him interested in Fossils as in a few years I will need someone to do the harder digging. So how young is too young to start them on a hobby collecting Fossils I ask you. Remember the shorter they are are the closer those eyes are to the ground to pick up those small fossils. Mike

I’m doing a paper for school on Salinity, particularly how it effects the bay and the living things inside it. I’m also supposed to compare it to the world at large. As a bonus for myself, I’m looking to show how salinity fluctuations have effected past ecosystems. Do they find all the mosasaurs in the Kem Kem beds? Or is that just the dinosaurs? What is the age of this marine habitat? Also, any other studies on the past salinity in the oceans and the effect of the salt on the ecosystem would be helpful. Thanks all!

Hello everyone! I know I recently reported on my major bucket-lister fossil, a four-inch tooth from the shark Carcharocles angustidens. Well...I think I may have just knocked another one off the list. Let me first say that I have a very limited knowledge of ice age mammal material, but this does seem to resemble examples of Mastodon (Mammut americanum) that I've seen before, which would make it a first for me. South Carolina doesn't exactly have the reputation for mammal material that Florida and Texas have, so this is a particularly gratifying find. Im curious about the size and degree of wear on this tooth. Am I correct in assuming that this tooth belonged to a juvenile individual? If so, why so much wear to the feeding surface? This is the first mammal tooth that I've found at the location that the Oligocene-age marine fossils I post. How did this one small vestige of the Pleistocene end up among Oligocene-Miocene marine material? Here she is -

Help! Scallop species to determine era.. Neithea or Pliocene shell??

Please help me with the below.. I found this pectenoid fossil and many more in the rumbles of an old mine in Attika area af Greece. Usually the terestrial fossils near the beach are of Pliocene or Pleistocene age. But this fossil comes from the digged earth of a mine and looks totally different than the Pliocene shells. It has Black color and the shape is also different.. It reminds me of Neithea species?? But Neithea were Jurassic era fossils... Could it be??? Size 3cm X 3cm.. Thank you very much in advance...!

I found these both in my lake in Ottertail county MN. The first piece is 4" long by 2" high. Is it petrified wood? How do you know how old it is or what type of wood? The second piece is 2.5" long by 1" and I am wondering if it is petrified wood and part of a tree branch or a petrified bone .

I have been wondering for a long time what everyone's favorite geological age was, based on fauna among other things. I personally prefer the Cambrian, as it is the oldest period of trilobites, qnd it contains some of the most intruiging lifeforms ever known (Wiwaxia, Anomalocaris, Opabina, etc.). So I just recently found a new trilobite site in GA only an hour and a half drive away from where I live. I plan on going there this weekend (tomorrow), but I do not know the exact age. I have currently been unsuccessful at finding a reliable geological map so far. Anyone have an idea on the age? Thanks!

This Coronocephalus trilobite just arrived in the mail. I don't really know a lot about them. I believe it is most likely C. gaoluoensis. I do know its from Hunan, China, but not much else. Middle Silurian? Anyone got any info? Also, what do you guys think of the fossil? I quite like it even though it needs to be cleaned up a little. Thanx!

Hi ya'll! I am looking to purchase some books. (I know. I know. We have SO many references online why do I need books?) I would like them not only to help with tooth and fossil ID but about epochs, evolution/lineage of sharks and discussions there about. I love reading about debated discussions on shark lineage. Areas I have hunted (and plan on hunting soon) include eastern Virginia, Calvert Cliffs of MD and Eastern NC including Aurora, GMR, and the near coastal of NC. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
