    Help with plant fossil ID

    This was found in Eastern Kentucky in the creek behind my house. Carboniferous. I think it might be astertophyllites. Is this correct?

    Mazon Creek "Cone"

    Maybe 6-7 years ago, I was at a local gem/mineral show. There was really just one dealer with a variety of fossils. it was a mix of what was left of a family collection that he had bought plus other stuff he picked up. He had lowered the price on whatever hadn't sold at the previous show. He had several Mazon Creek specimens - mostly small "ferns" in nodules plus a weird arthropod-looking thing. I had hardly any Mazon Creek stuff other than what I think is a Paleoxyris so I asked him what he would take for the group. It was super-cheap so I bought the pile. I thought it was cool that I got both halves as it makes it a more interesting display piece. The nodule is about 2 1/2 inches (58mm) long It was labelled simply as "Will County, IL cone" so I was left to assume it's a Mazon Creek piece just out of what it looks like. is it a cone? If so, what plant?. If not, what is it? I have an older reference for the plants of the deposit, "Guide to Pennsylvanian Fossil Plants of Illinois" by james R. Jennings but it's buried in a box somewhere and may be outdated. I'll still try to dig that out just to see what it says. I request the opinions of the "Mazon Creek regulars," the names I see pop up when the subject of the fauna and flora comes up, plus anyone else with an interest. @RCFossils @Nimravis, @deutscheben, @connorp Thanks, Jess

    Is this coprolite?

    Found this in the creek behind my house in Eastern Kentucky. It's been raining (and flooding) a lot so tons of rocks are being washed out of the hills. I'm uncertain what era this could be from since I'm not exactly sure where it washed out from. The pictures I'm including show it while it was still in the rock and after I removed it. I thought it was made of metal at first, but it isn't magnetic at all, nor is it soft like lead or aluminum. After looking around online the closest thing I could find to it's shape is fish coprolite. Is this coprolite or just some strange thing in a rock?
  4. Could these be compression fossils of Paleozoic invertebrates (such as someone of the strange shrimp-like creatures)? Crane Hill, AL Carboniferous Thanks for looking.
  5. Pottsville Formation, Alabama I would like to peek under the mud on the specimen in the first pic to determine if it is a compression fossil. This film on this particular sample seems brittle so I have to be careful. I can see pigmentation under some of the mud - that is where I want to work. Ideas? I hope I’m using these terms (carbon film, compression fossil) properly. I included other pics of other specimens that have carbon film or some type of mineral imprint (not sure what the term for this is) that I am to cleaning, sorting and comparing to potential compression fossils from Carboniferous. I was initially ignoring the specimens that look like pattern could be iron staining- thinking all were Liesegang rings, but I’m not sure that explains all of them.

    Calling on the usual members, again, to either confirm or refute my attempt at ID on these five Mazon Creek specimens. These are all close to the same size -- about 1.5 inches (4.25 cm) in the greatest dimension.

  9. Female, head disarticulated and displaced. The fish is embedded in a mass of filamentous algae. Alternative combination: Physonemus falcatus. "The genus Physonemus was originally erected for P. arcuatus by McCoy (1848) to receive elegant forwardly-curved, well omamented Paleozoic fin spines of unknown affìnities ... The Paleozoic fin spine Physonemus falcatus St. John and Worthen 1883, from the Valmeyeran St. Louis Limestone of St. Louis, Missouri, has been found on sexually mature males of a small, highly sexually dimorphic chondrichthyan from the Chesterian Bear Gulch Limestone of Montana" (Lund 1985, p.1). Diagnosis from Lund 1985, p.3: “Small sharks, maximum known size 145 mm fork length, with forwardly-curved spines, inclined at mean angle of 14.5 degrees to the horizontal. Neither spine nor first dorsal fin present on juveniles below 124 mm length, nor on females. Males with elongate rostrum, denticles covering dorsum of rostrum, cranium and dista] portion of dorsal rod, females with short rostrum and devoid of denticles. Teeth delicate, cladodont, tooth whorls of larger, non-cladodont teeth external to jaws. Pectoral fin with five prearticular basals, a metapterygium bearing six radials, and an axis of seven elements with only one radial. Pelvic girdle supports 8—10 radials; clasper of male consisting of 6—8 axials and a three-part mixopterygium. Second dorsal fin of 12—14 well spaced radials followed by a triangular basal plate, l9—21 distal radials. Axial skeleton of 44 precaudal segments, 18 preural caudals and 16—18 ural caudals.   10. I'm chipping away at what I think is brush creek limestone to find what I think is Mooreoceras (first two pics) and Metacoceras. I have no idea what the last fossil is. All help is appreciated, thank you.

    Mazon Creek Arthropod ID

    I had this Mazon Creek arthropod open recently. It was collected from the Braidwood fauna (freshwater/terrestrial), so initially I thought this was just a tiny syncarid shrimp as they are the most common arthropod to find here. However looking at it closer, I'm not so sure and was hoping for a second opinion. In particular, the legs are short and spiny and do not look like shrimp legs to me, although I may be wrong. Here are images of the positive and negative sides of the "head", middle, and rear, respectively. I put "head" in quotes because I can't tell if this is the head of the animal, or if it continues more into the concretion. @RCFossils @Nimravis @Mark Kmiecik @deutscheben @stats @bigred97 @flipper559 Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Pennsylvanian shark part?

    An ID post for a similarly shaped object @Mark Kmiecik made last month reminded me of this Pennsylvanian concretion I found a while ago at an eastern Illinois spoil pile. It has a shape and texture suggestive of a piece of chondrichthyan cartilage as @fiddlehead had mentioned in the earlier post, although the pattern is not well-defined like it is in other cartilage finds I have made. Thoughts? I’ll loop @jdp in too while I’m at it.

    Francis Creek Shale

    The Francis Creek Shale in northeast Illinois is best known for producing Mazon Creek concretions. However, the shale itself also contains an extremely diverse and well preserved flora (and fauna occasionally). Unfortunately, the shale is extremely soft, and quickly weathers to clumps of clay. This makes collecting from the shale very challenging, and most collectors don't even bother trying. On a recent trip I found some fresh chunks of shale and decided to try and save some of the plants. Even working with fresh shale, it was still very hard to extract anything. Larger pieces crumbled easily, flat surfaces flaked as they dried, and some fossils were destroyed just by accidentally brushing a finger against them. These specimens represent what I was able to save. They have been sitting out for over a week now and seem stable as long as they are not handled, but only time will tell if they last. Crenulopteris acadica Crenulopteris subcrenulata Neuropteris fimbriata (seed fern pinnule) Lepidostrobophyllum lanceolatus (cone bracts) On the left is a fern I am unsure of, any thoughts are appreciated. On the right is Stigmarioides. I have not found many examples of this taxa in concretions but it seems fairly common in the shale. I think this is also Stigmarioides. Many of the scars are plugged with pyrite - it was bright gold when I first split the shale but oxidation has darkened it. Hopefully these will last, but if not I wanted to post photographs in case they don't.

    Carboniferous Plant Fossils

    Recently visited Whitehaven in Cumbria, UK, and split some ironstone/shale rocks on the foreshore towards Parton Bay. I could mostly identify the many Calamites however I did spot some pinnate leaves which I am unsure about. The fossils are of the Carboniferous Period, Bolsovian Substage (315.2-309.5mya) a few million years prior to the CRC. The specimens here look somewhat like modern pine leaves though it is my understanding that conifers were not fully established at this point. Could they be the leaves of Calamites themselves, as all of the specimens are found in rocks also containing roots of the Calamites? They don't seem to look like any other of the fern-like leaves common in Whitehaven, and even Calamites leaves are apparently digitate. Sorry if the answer is obvious, I am for the most part a beginner - particularly with carboniferous fossils. Thanks!
  15. Hello all, I am a professor of biology and environmental science, and have been collecting fossils as a hobby for about two years now. My collection is mostly Upper Carboniferous plants and Devonian bivalves, but I am always excited for something different when I find it. I am currently planning to make a trip through WV to find trilobites, as my collection has none!     Late Pennsylvanian Fish Tooth

    Whatever this fish tooth is, I've never found one before. I had a small sliver showing in a rock and spent over an hour slowly air scribing over it and getting it to this point. I'm hesitant to go much further, as I may break it. I considered Polyacrodus for the shape, but I see none with the pitted pattern that this has. Tired of trying to ID Pennsylvanian fish teeth yet, @connorp? Maybe this is another paver type teeth from a ray, etc. For scale, the length of the tooth in the first photo is 13 mm.

    I Don't See This In My Field Guide

    I just have so many questions, thanks for your patience. Found these two pieces in what, I think, is Brush Creek Limestone; they're definitely Pennsylvanian Period and from Allegheny County, PA. The first one is 3 cm x 1 cm, the second is about 2.5 cm long.

    Big gastropod.

    This caught me off guard today. I've been so busy trying to figure out my theory on triassic material that I overlooked other stuff. I think I need it prepped a little because sandstone is covering details. I took a close up of side of shell to see the odd circle patterns. I need to work on this one a little to bring everything out. But in meantime it's a find I cross off my book. I found this in elk county, Pa. Thanks.

    Pennsylvanian Snails and Clams?

    Hello again, I found these tiny specimens today, and I'm not quite sure what they are. If I had to guess, I'd say the spiral shelled creature is Amphiscapha and the more clamish one looks a bit like Kozlowskia without the little side wings. No idea what the last one is. As always, all help is greatly appreciated. Also, sorry about the bad pics, these are quite small specimens.

  23. I was lucky enough last week to be able to make my second donation to the collections of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. This donation consisted of two Mazon Creek finds from the river itself, both collected on the I&M Canal outing last year. The first is an extremely rare tetrapod larva. The second fossil is an exceedingly well-preserved Orthacanthus tooth, featuring serrations in the cusp, a very rare trait for Mazon Creek teeth of this sort. It may prove to be complete as well. I was able to visit the museum to make the donation this time and it was an honor to go behind the scenes and talk to professional paleontologists about these specimens and Mazon Creek collecting. Thanks again to @jdp for helping make this possible!
