ID of fossil needed. Concretion found lethbridge, alberta
Craig Zacharias posted a topic in Fossil ID
Concretion found in the lethbridge, Alberta river bottom. Broke it open to find a bulbous shell formation within. The Tyrell museum is looking at the photos but I’m curious if anyone could come up with an ID in the interim. IMG_4536.mov- 4 replies

Hello! I had the privilege of joining ESCONI to Mazon’s Pit 4 yesterday and came across this concretion. There’s a very good chance it’s nothing, but I thought the 3D shape might be peculiar. The concretion is about 1.5 cm wide in total. Thank you for looking!

Hi everyone. I was up in northwest Pennsylvania a few days ago seeing some friends and found this wild thing on their property. It's not my usual hunting grounds and I wasn't particularly looking for fossils at the time, so I never bothered to do research on the area. What I can tell you is that it was found in northern Crawford County, PA, which I believe is Devonian (but may also be Mississippian). Nearby were some brachiopods in sandstone. If extra pictures are needed, just let me know. Please help!

I went surface collecting, looking for fossils near Terra Haute Indiana and and came home with a number of concretions. Most were pretty plant fossils, and one was a plant hash plate and then there was this concretion. I dont know what to make out of it, so any help or suggestions will be very welcome. It is approximately 3 inches by 1 inch , and I am showing upper and lower sides.

Been slowly working on this fossil concretion using a dremel tool and some coats of B72, slow progress but I am starting to expose some of the bone. Can anyone give me any tips or advice, this is my first time doing prep work on bone.

Hi all, last week I found an interesting rock formation that appears to be cropolite. At least based on a few images I was able to compare it against online. The formation was found on an island beach off the west coast of Michigan. Thank you for any help identifying it!

Fossils or just interesting concretions? Found in Big Brook, NJ
TRexEliot posted a topic in Fossil ID
Ordinarily I would throw something back if I didn't have at least a tentative ID when I saw it or some strong reason to believe it's a fossil, but this I really wasn't sure about. I have no idea what they might be, but I had never seen a concretion quite like them before in the brook, and I found it even more bizarre that I ended up finding two of them. Any thoughts?- 2 replies

Earlier this week I had 2 concretions pop open that I weren’t too sure of what they were. Number one has the calcite desiccation cracks that are consistent with Achistrum sp. I guess the shape is what is kind of throwing me off, and the body seems to segmented, which reminded me of a millipede. Number 2 I cant really see any discernible features in it at all but if I had to guess a type of a polychaete worm? Anyway I’m gonna leave this to the experts lol. Any help is appreciated!

Finally after a streak of bad luck with my concretions I think I’ve found something. First concretion I am almost certain contains something. Looks to me like a worm (?) Second I’m not super confident on but looks different from a lot of the other duds I’ve opened. Wouldn’t have much of an idea of what it could be. Third definitely also looks like something to me, one half did break a bit but I should be able to fix that. I hope the pictures are in order! I will try to fix if not. (I put the penny for scale if that helps)

I do lapidary, and cut a lot of rocks. I bought this one, and eventually cut it in half. I assume it was a concretion or a solid geode of sorts. Still interesting so I will send you a few photos. Thank You David

Hello everyone! My name is Paul and I have recently started collecting (or at least trying) and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on opening Mazon creek concretions. I made my first two trips last weekend and I think I have some concretions and have been using the freeze thaw method of opening. There are a few I gathered that seem to have what I've been calling an "egg" inside and I am wondering if this is just a rock with an outer layer, or worth freeze thawing until it finally pops. I attached photos of a few of these, one which I stripped of the entire outer layer, and also a picture of my prized blob! Which is the only fossil I have found so far lol. Any help is much appreciated!

Hello all, this is a small concretion I broke by hand from the Mazonia Braidwood locale. Concretion is 1.1 inch or 2.42 cm in diameter. I'm thinking it's simply empty, however in the event it was a hard to see jellyfish I figured I'd ask. I think animals usually appear as white carbonized silhouettes but some of the jellyfish appear colored.

I have found a lot of shark or other types of fish cartilage and bone from this site but this looks like soft tissue. The preserved part has several layers with 1 side of the layer being mostly smooth and the other having the textured surface. The concretion is about 4cm long. Any information or other possibilities would be very helpful.
