Hello, I am new to this forum so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I inherited a very large collection of rocks, gemstones, and what I've been told is petrified wood. I see there's a lot of experts on here and any help will be greatly appreciated. I live in Las Vegas, NV and My Father collected literally hundreds of all types of rocks etc... Thank You!!

Hello! I am stumped trying to Identify this piece my neighbor gave me. I'm a genetic molecular scientist....not a lot of geology experience! Thought it could be texas holey rock, but there is quite a bit of color. Possibly limestone, but again, the color?! Maybe coral, but I'm not finding any definitive shapes that resemble coral. The majority of the piece has tiny holes. One side of it doesn't have any at all. Any and all ideas are appreciated!

Hi! My family just returned from a vacation to the Riviera Maya near Playa del Carmen and we are curious if anyone could help ID this piece my 10yr old found while sifting in the surf. Apologies if it’s not a fossil at all, but it looks very different from any of the fossilized coral and shells we found. He has been calling it the “Claw” but hoping it is actually a shark tooth, but we do realize shark teeth seem to not be found much in that region. Internet searches have not helped me narrow down the possibilities, but those searches helped me find your forum. Regardless, we love this piece and we think it is an awesome find! Any ideas/help is appreciated! Thanks!

Found this coral head today where I’ve found other agatized coral in the Tampa Bay area in FL. To me it looks suspicious, it has a slightly blue color around its edges and has some botryoidal formations on the outside. It’s not super lightweight though, so I don’t think it’s hollow (or completely hollow). Does this look like it’s worth cutting? Is it likely to have any voids or botryoidal formations inside based on other agatized corals you guys have seen? recorded-478291984396.mp4

I want to call this coral but doesn't look like any I've seen from Texas, maybe it's the size and being agatized that I don't recognize it. Tabulate coral or rudist maybe? Found in mostly Cretateous Eagle Ford creek.

I wanted some coral for display purposes so I decided to see if I’d have any luck finding some at Flag Ponds today. I wasn’t expecting much of anything because of hitting it right after the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised with the results of my outing. I not only found plenty of coral I found my first porpoise tooth!!! I was also able to come back with a few nice shark teeth, ray plates, a croc tooth, and plenty of bone frags.

So, what do I do to separate a fossil from the sediment? Like a coral fossil as example. Do I use acid? I heard you can also use vinegar but I don't know. Also, what is probably the best prepping starter kit online, or in hardware stores? I want to get a full set of stuff but don't know where to find a good bang for your buck. I really want to get into that type of work soon.

Hi all, a friend of a friend found this on the most northern point of Lake Superior, off Copper Harbor. I suspect it is fossil but to my eye it just strikes me as modern. Maybe escaped aquarium coral. But this person also claims to have found other pieces of corals there. Might anyone be able to say if this agrees with fossil corals of that area or is it a taxon not to be expected from the Paleozoic? Thanks!

Yesterday I was able to take a trip to the Silurian Racine formation of Southern Wisconsin. This site was easier than others due to the clear stratification, and I was able to see some of the reef overlay and underlay. finds included: my first dolomitized crinoid calyx, a nice fez-looking coral, some Bumastus trilobits, and what looks like a Cornulites impression? I’m curious if anyone has thoughts on the circular impression with calcite growths in it- unsure if it‘s an imprint or just a gap with mineral growth. Included a fun extra picture of old and new critters paired together.
