    my display

Got some minerals in there such as mesolite, malachite, pyrite and quartz, calcite, kyanite and quartz, stibnite, and a bunch more. I'm not able to identify all of these. All I know is they are from the Devonian time period and some ordovician.
  2. I have several bones I’d like to display but need to make my own stands. Specifically I have a triceratops rib that I’d like to use as a centerpiece for my table. I see all the time where there’s metal stands that wrap around the bone to hold it in place. What kind of metal are people using that’s pliable enough? Anyone making their own mounts?

    Shark Tank

Hi all Mrs Rico and I made this display tonight. It is made with a bell jar , upside down glass planter/bowl and fairy lights. I will add more lights to the base tomorrow. I think it looks cool with the shark’s head floating in the space of the bell jar. I do like the curio/macabre and scientific look. I hope you all like it and thanks for looking. Cheers Bobby

    Not much to spare

I finally picked up the display cabinets from my sister's place. The last of my parents legacy for me. I barely had enough room to pack these into my tiny place. My bedroom is piled high so as to make my living room more displayable. Now I have the tedious job of filling them. The larger will be strictly for the ammos. Corner one is for other niceties. My ammo cabinet, waiting on my having some time to fill. Corner unit...a work in progress. I will repost when cabinets are filled.
  5. Hello All, hope you are having a happy new years. This fish tank had a very high mortality rate when my fish were in it. I lost two beautiful fish to its open space. Yep, they jumped out. I found them a few days later as little crisps. Not nice. That's when I drained it. It sat there for a good while all empty but then when i got my Ammo for Christmas that some of you saw, I needed a place to store it. I managed to cleanly detach the light from the filter's base and then used a velcro strip to reposition it so that the light would provide a cool view on the ammonite. Then I took the filter off, leaving some empty space towards the back. It really only took me forty five minutes, and that's because I had to go to our local CVS for the velcro strips.
  6. Hello, Anyone knows where I can buy riker mounts to fossil display in Europe... I want to avoid problems with customs and a european site or seller will be perfect. Thanks

    Cheaper Side Fossil Drawers

Bolstered from Christmas and recent fossil hunting, my collection has quite outgrown it's original case. I have been looking around and found a really nice set of drawers at Ikea for around 130$ but which is slightly limited on drawer space. I don't exactly have a high budget, I'm prepared to pay at least 150 usd for anything, but before i'd buy I would like to ask you all if you knew any drawers and/or could point me in the right place. I understand I can't spend much with my budget, but it never hurts to ask! Thanks all, FA
  8. I've been wanting to get cabinets to replace my open shelves for a long time because I'm sick of dusting. I went to look at two curio cabinets that were a good deal on Craigslist Saturday and they weren't as good of shape as they looked and they reek of smoke. Obviously I didn't buy them. Well I am very happy that the other purchase of two cabinets did not work out. I got steal of a deal on these two 1800s cabinets instead. I also got a great deal on the third cabinet but I don't have pictures of it yet. One was from a private seller that just wanted to get rid of it the other two are from an antique store that is closing and just trying to get rid of its merchandise. Way better than the particle board shelves with glass doors I looked at Ikea last week. Way better deal to. Once again patience paid off. Someone put a copper panel in the one replacing the glass. I'm going to take the copper panel out and put glass back in. I will post pictures once I get them set up with my fossil and and the lights. Yahoo goodbye to dusting hundreds of fossils one by one!

    Framing a Diplomystus

When I was out at American Fossil Quarry earlier this year digging for Green River fish, I came across this nice little Diplomystus dentatus. Except for missing part of the tail, it’s in good shape. It was on a much larger slab, so to make it easier to bring home I trimmed it to the shape you see here while I was at the quarry. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but I’ve now decided to frame it and give it as a Christmas gift. The shape didn’t lend itself to easy framing, so I decided to make sort of a shadow-box frame. I went to the local Home Depot and picked up a strip of walnut 1½ inches wide by ¼ inch thick and cut it down to be 1 inch wide. I ran it through my router table to cut a ledge along the bottom edge for the back to slip in, then cut the single long board into the four sides. I used a disk sander to put 45-degree bevels in the edges, then glued it all together, stained it, and gave it a clear-coat finish. (I don’t have photos of these initial steps). I cut the back to size from a piece of ¼ inch thick MDF board. I wanted a black background for the fish, so I cut a piece of black velvet and used spray adhesive to hold it down on the MDF. I didn’t want to glue the fish to the velvet, so I cut out an area that allowed me to epoxy the fish directly to the MDF board. I also printed a small label on my laser printer, glued it to a piece of thick mounting board, and used an X-acto knife to cut it to size. Again, I didn’t want to glue this to the velvet, so I cut out a small area for the label. I also attached a sawtooth hanger to the back of the MDF so it can be hung on a wall. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Here are a few pictures along the way: Original slab: Walnut frame with velvet backing applied and hole cut out to allow fish to be epoxied to MDF backing: Fish set into frame with label:
  10. Hi I have a question regarding storing and safely displaying a pyrite fossil. I have read a great deal about pyrite disease so I know that's something to be carefull of and I have read you best keep them away from humid and store them in an air-sealed container. And now that's where I am heading with this question, what is all considered as a possible air-sealed container? I am currently keeping my pyrite ammonite (Pleuroceras Spinatum from Buttenheim in Germany) in a small transparent box as seen in the photo below, but is this good enough? Is this air-tight and will this protect the fossil from possibly falling victim to pyrite disease? Or do you guys recommend other ways to display it? Safer ways... Than the second part of my question... Some might already read that I am currently working on a new fossil room, and since it's nearly finished I was wondering wether it was safe to house pyrite fossils in said room when I take some precautions. Cause along with my fossils the room will contain 2 aquaria: one freshwater aquarium with my Polypterus retropinnis, and one brackish water with my Gymnothorax tile. (Also before transforming into a fossil room this room used to be one of the 2 aquarium/terrarium rooms in the house and it contained at one point 12 aquaria and we never really experienced problems with moisture.) As precautious measure I was planning to add a small dehumidifier just to be safe, but so my second question. Would it be wise to house a pyrite fossil in an air-tight container in this room even if it has a dehumidifier in it? And should you also recommend me to preserve the fossil in some paraloid on the fossil, I still have a bottle with 100 ml of paraloid. I would like to hear your opinions on the matter. Which container to use? To preserve it with Paraloid or not? And if I can move it the to new fossil room or if I should leave it in my old display case in my living room? Thank you in advance!
  11. Hey gang....I'm trying to find a source for the inexpensive white folding specimen boxes. They start out as a flat cross shape and fold to about an inch deep by whatever size....I'm looking for several sizes, from about 2 inches square to 4 inches. Anyone have a good source? Thanks in advance!
  12. Hi everyone! I am new here, and a newbie to fossil collecting in general. I have a question I haven’t quite been able to find answers to by searching on the site. Hope this is the right on the forum place to ask.... I have some fossils I am thinking of displaying in a dry aquarium, and I would like to add live plants in with them. Is this OK for the fossils? Will the moisture from watering plants harm them at all or cause any problems? (They’ve made it millions of years and I don’t want to damage them after all this time!) Thanks for any help!

    New display

This may already be really well known and maybe not even the right forum, but I found a really really neat stand to display my teeth and claw. I'm pretty darn new to this fossil stuff so forgive me if I'm dropping old knowledge
  14. I would be very greatful if someone could link me to the artists polish/coating they use to preserve and give ammonites a nice shine. I bought beeswax but it came in a large block and melting will be too messy each time. Also the links to buy paraloid and acetone for presevation of bone material. I dont want to buy the wrong thing. online or amazon if possible! Cheers

    My fossils display

Since was a child I have looked for a nice and comfortable way to display my fossils. Finally, I have found the solution! I have bought an old typographic furniture and I have restored it.

    Fossil display

Spotted this today from our favourite Scandinavian flat pack furniture store . This is for kids toys but maybe fantastic for a cheap show case for fossil or diorama. Have a look.
  19. I have formally set up my fossil collection room! The cats are forbidden to enter, as they get fur on everything and they like to knock things off of shelves. I need a bookcase for my references, and a few other touches, but all in all I am happy with the results!

    Display stand

Hi all I just made a small display stand for my woolly rhino tooth. It made from wire and an old weighing scales weight. Turned out nice I think. Thank for looking. glued Painted Better pictures tomorrow.

    Coffee, Anyone?

Our coffee table. Little of this, little of that. Smalls go in Rikers, big stuff in cabinets or on shelves. Medium sized stuff needs somewhere to live too..
  23. I just finished up a display case for my dad's cave bear tooth. It will go on the wall. The background is an old diagram of a cave bear jaw; I have digital copy. I printed it on card stock at shutterfly.com. It is really lovely. I think the card stock looks a lot better than the regular print for this; with a coupon, it was free. The shadowbox frame is a very nice one I got at Micheals; with a sale and a coupon I got it for about $7. It is 8x10 and front opening. I drilled a hole in the back of the frame and put in a copper wire loop for holding the tooth. The tooth is removable. The image I used is attached below, feel free download it to print your own. I have one extra copy of the image printed on card stock, if someone wants it to make their own, I'll send it to you if you pay postage. Can't promise the USPS won't bend it though.

    display cases?

Hi all Since I was thinking about getting more into fossil hunting I'm going to need a good spot to store my finds. does anyone have any suggestions on airtight glass/plastic display cases? on a side note, what about brass identification plaques? i think those would be helpful Thanks -Diamond
  25. I know it’s been talked about on here for making displays for smaller specimens. But what about larger specimens? What do you do when you have a full length tail section or when you have a full skeleton? I look at the displays in stores and museums and I cannot figure it out. I can weld and all that. But what I cannot figure out is how they get the metal bands wrapped so tight around the bone. The bone obviously has to sit into the main frame before the bands get wrapped around certain areas. How do they do that without damaging the specimen? The only thing I could think of was the material may be stainless steel or aluminum, so it’s an easy metal to bend. But then after that, how is the display stand painted? I don’t think you can paint it before and then bend it. The paint would chip and flake off as soon as you bend it. So If anyone has any information how this process works, I would love your help
