wierd prep or bad fish

Got this fish from a popular fossil site for their new years sale. The longer I look at it the more red flags I am seeing. It was listed as unidentified, upper cretaceous-lower Turonian stage, Asfla Goulmima Morocco. All my other fish are either Green River or from Lebanon so I don't have anything to compare it to. First flag the entire top of the fish looks carved from the matrix. Second the matrix is riddled with bubbles on all sides and the back. Last once I borrowed a black light the matrix is dotted fluorescence throughout as well as a border around the fish. Am I just ignorant to how these are prepped or is my gut right?

Hey guys, This tooth was recently purchased by a family member and they gave it to me as a Christmas present. They don't know much about fossils and thought it was the real deal. However soon after getting my hands on it I could tell it was a fake or at least partially a fake. The root was too big and it smelled kind of strange. I didn't have the heart to tell my family member that it was fake. It had only been in the draw around 10 days and it literally started falling apart. At this point we tried to contact the seller as they had listed it as a real genuine tooth (they mentioned small restorations but not that the entire root was fake). I didn't get a reply and this angered me as it wasn't cheap. It cost over £400. The guy is still selling fakes and people are buying them. I don't want anyone to feel as disappointed as I did. He even has a fake tooth on there right now. It's frustrating because it ruins it for everyone else who is interested in collecting real fossils. As mentioned the whole root was fake and was like a pink putty. After poking around more the whole thing crumbled in my hand. Even the tooth itself had strange white stuff embedded in it and started to chip off. I'm sure many of you are great at spoting fakes but perhaps this could help a new member or someone who's not sure about these kind of things. Thanks for reading!

This "Selenopeltis gallica" is currently being auctioned online. The seller assures us that it is authentic. Well, it is an authentic rock carving.

This supposed real Cretaceous croc from Khourigba, Morocco is up for auction and, uh, isn't this just a painted cast with some real croc teeth thrown in?

At our favorite auction site, a seller is offering in several ads, these beautiful boulders that are no more than mere geological occurrences, which anyone can find on the edge of any river, as if they were genuine Pterosaur eggs ... But the Freak Circus does not end here, there's more! He announces as if these "eggs" had visible Pterosaur embryos. Can anyone see? But if you're a picky fossil collector who does not like rickety and scrawny creatures like the Pterosaurs ... His problems are over, because now he also sells boulders as if they were dinosaur eggs: How does he know what a Pterosaur egg is and what is a Dinosaur egg? Anyone have any explanation? A genuine egg of the Pterosaur is very, very rare, and is extremely different from these boulders that are widely being offered! That is, genuine Pterosaur eggs have shells, consisting essentially of an outer layer of thin and hard limestone, while under the shell was a softer membrane: And thanks to these meager but true discoveries is that we now know that pterosaur eggs were malleable, similar to the snake eggs of today: Unfortunately I can not reveal prices here, but believe me, these fake eggs do not cost anything cheap! So the high price is a great seducer, a real temptation for a novice and inexperienced collector, to think that high price means rarity, therefore, authenticity! The advice is the same as always, study on the subject so that the light of knowledge can dispel the darkness of ignorance.

Hi, I am new to fossil collecting. My main interest is Invertebrates & Fish Have seen some suppliers on online (UK). There are 2 big advertisers / shops that have some items that I am interested in. How do I know if the items being offered are genuine? If I am correct, I am not allowed to name them or post a link? Advice welcome Thanks

Psittacosaurus skull or just a rock?

Was just looking through online, and found this item. Now, to me at least, I cannot see if this is just a regular rock. There seems to be some sort of honey-cone (bone) structure in some places, but I just cannot see how this is a real deal psittacosaurus skull. Seems a little too good to be true. What are your opinions guys? -

More ludicrous "Dinosaur eggs"

I saw these beauties on a popular auction site a few days ago. They are described as authentic dinosaur eggs. Clearly, they are anything but, and they appear to be simple septarian nodules. Anybody interested in how to determine whether a dinosaur egg is fake or not should do a forum search, since the subject has been comprehensively covered. This first one, you'll be fascinated to know, actually shows the preserved embryo. They have a couple of hundred watchers, and are already at a remarkable price for ordinary rocks. I informed the seller that they were not dinosaur eggs, in the interest of giving them the benefit of the doubt. Are these likely authentic - New to the "sport"

Hello, While on a trip through Yellowstone country with the family last summer we stopped at fossil/rock shop in West Yellowstone and my son became interested in fossils. Fast forward to today I happened upon several "fossils" for sale semi-locally but on-line. I think my son would love to have them for his birthday, but it would be a fair drive to check them out in person, so before doing that, or buying them on faith I was hoping perhaps someone from this forum could take a look at the pics and give me your assessment of the potential authenticity. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and passion with me. I love people who love their hobbies, and enjoy sharing knowledge.

I had purchased a lot of Madascar banded agates, and it looked too good to be true. So one was broken only to find a clear, banded pattern underneath about a millimeter thick colored outside. If one is like this, then I presume all is. I have spent alot of money purchasing these just to be fake? Please help me to be sure.

Real Psittacosaurus Skull?

So this has cropped up on an auction site. My friend is tempted by it, however I believe it to just be a rock. It is claimed to be a Psittacosaur Skull. The seller claims that they acquired it off a 'geologist' however to me, it looks like an eroded rock, and lacks any characteristics of being a skull? I feel like it could potentially mislead uninformed newbies? Pictures aren't fantastic. I could be totally wrong of course, however can anyone else see if it is a skull or not?

There is a continuous discussion on whether eggs sold online from Malaysia sellers are real or fakes. There are some eggs which are clearly fakes and other which look real. I am not sure about the oviraptor eggs. I put some photos here from an egg that was recently auctioned. What do you think? Fake? Heavily restored? Against better judgement, I acquired a "keishosaurus" fossil. I trust the dealer - but not necessarily their source. I'm attaching some photos - please let me know your opinion - do you think it's a real one, "restored/painted", or a complete/near complete fake. The chip in the left forearm looks concerning to me. Any insight is appreciated.

Hello everyone, I'm an Italian amateur collector with a small but nice collection of fossils and minerals that I started when I was 5yo in 1995. Then at 15yo I put apart my passion until few days ago when, using my 3D printer, I made some nice modular drawer to reorder in my collection of +-1000 pieces. I will finish the project in the next weeks and I will share it with you, as it can be of inspiration for your collection as well. Doing this hard work, I looked with a more mature point of view some big fossils that my parents and friends (not experts!) gave me as present many years ago. I already noticed that some are painted or assembled, but I would like to hear your opinion about them. #1 Let's start with a good one. This was a present from my mom, so I know she spent not few moneys to buy this fossil fish. I think that it 99% real. My only concern is the right side/section of the matrix that has a change in color (you can see it in the video). Maybe just a not-too-bad restoration... I drew circles around fishes with the pencil when I was a child... I should delete them! #2 Now a bad one... In this example I noticed that maybe the fish body is real (but low quality), it is mounted on a new matrix, and fins are painted... Am I right? #3 Another bad one... This ammonoidea seems painted. The matrix has some fossil shells, it is cracked and repaired (you can see the crack in the video, back side). I'm wondering if it is totally fake/sculpted or only painted. What do you think? #4 The last assembled fossil fish. This one is funny! Sedimentary layers are not parallel with the fossil... Overall I think that the body is real but bad preserved and with some painting. What do you think? #5 This was one of the first fossils of my collection. I personally bought it in Morocco in 1995. I think that this is a real one, joint is perfect. Agree with me? #6 Finally, the last piece: a cambropallas trilobite. About this one, I know that it was bought in a good shop and I think it is not too bad. I'm not sure about the matrix (see the back side), but the main body seems real. It, of course, has some restorations. I'm looking to hear from you. Final thoughts... I'm considering giving away false ones, in particular #2, #3 and #4. But it is also nice to have them to show how fossils are faked/retouched - I think they're part of the amateur paleontology history. I hope you appreciate the photos/videos I took to show some of my fossils. Thanks in advance and best regards!
