  1. Real or fake? It’s a nice looking piece, so I might be interested in it still if it is a cast or a combo, but also don’t want to overpay if that’s the case.
  2. Hey y’all, I just wanted to know if this tooth is real or not . My dad bought it for me as a kid at a fair in Virginia in 2013 . As you can see it’s not in the best of shape . But this tooth holds a lot of sentimental value because this tooth sparked my interest in fossil collecting and I just want to know if it’s real or not. I would love any thoughts and input .
  3. Hi all, I’ve just purchased a large Agadir Ammonite from a dedicated fossil shop and am wondering if it at all real? I would appreciate any inclination!
  4. Hi I am totally new to buying fossils online and need a bit of hand-holding. Dear experts: would you say this is fake or real?
  5. Hi all, Well here it is. Oviraptor egg from a 30 year old collection located in the United States. Bought first and read posts on here about fakes later. Smart right? I'll attach pictures but my concerns are 1. It isn't pancaked like most ones I see, 2. Texture changes on the surface could be matrix repairs, 3. On broken areas shell thickness is not consistent. I'll add the best pictures I can. Almost looks like it was painted in the last picture. Thoughts on this would be appreciated. Good or bad lol.
  6. Hey everyone! I made an account just to ask this question from some real experts: is this Mosasaur jaw real? I bought a tooth from the same shop and the matrix looked the same: some bones scattered about in the dirt and rock. (It’s the one right under my pinkie I’m the image) I’m a little thrown off because, well firstly, the shop traveled to vendor at a fair and that seems a little suspicious. Secondly, they’re selling other items that are commonly faked from Morocco like Trilobites. I really want this to be real but I can’t justify buying a fake…
  7. hi folks, Im thinking of buying a cluster of Oviraptor from a seller who says he got these at a gem/fossil show over 10 years ago. He says he preps fossils and has extensive experience but has not finished prepping these particular eggs and won't get around to abrading them out of the matrix. I told him they are fake but he insists they are not, so I wanted to put it to the test here. thanks for your help.
  8. Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well I have recently started getting myself into collecting fossils and I came upon this lot of jellyfish fossils so I purchased them because they seemed interesting and it’s something I never had. Do these look fine ? To me they just look like stained rocks but that could just be because jellyfish are soft bodied organisms. Thanks for your input
  9. Hi there members of this forum! Made the mistake(prety probably) and impulse bought this piece, which went by the name: "Mosasaur Dinosaur Jaw Teeth fossile" Im not shure it said from Morocco, but most stuff in the shop was there,so this one is probably i guess... Well now im kinda shure its "Jaw" section is made out of 3 pices,so im not shure if the rest is allso "legit". (I hope at least the theeth is real) So if any of you great fellows can help ID this.(Probably turns out to be some dessert folkart:) Sorry for the meh cellphone pictures ,and thanks in advance!
  10. Hello, I apologize in advance as I'm sure questions like this come up a lot. I'm thinking about purchasing this dinosaur egg which I believe is from a fairly reputable seller. I've always wanted a real dinosaur egg for my collection, but I just wanted to get some opinions on whether you think this one is real or a fake? Thank you very much for any assistance!
  11. Hello all. My first purchase. I'm pretty confident of they're authenticity. But I just want any concern settled. Slight impulse buy as they were in an auction and it almost ended. Tooth #1: Actually has sand still stuck in its crevices and still smells like the sea. This might make it an obvious real specimen but I don't know how far fakers are willing to go. The white striations are a lot more prominent in the pictures. They don't really look like that in person. Polishing compound? Reportedly Otodus Megalodon from South Carolina. Tooth #2: Very little sand can be seen. A lot cleaner. No odor. Same deal with the white lines (cracks) in enamel. Reportedly Otodus Megalodon, about the Miocene period. South Carolina. Though I thought the Otodus and Miocene period occured at different times. Can't find a definitive answer.
  12. I got this fossil today. But it looks a little bit suspicious to me. Especially the color and the light yellow tips of the brittle star. Can you please have a look for me? Thanks.
  13. I bought this piece online and it just looks too good to be true, especially for the price.
  14. Recently I've read about fake Moroccan trilobites, so I'm afraid every fossil in my collection is fake Could you help me figure out if these two specimen are genuine or not? One is Hollardops, the other a Barrendeops (I think).
  15. 3'5 inch Carcharodontosaurus S. Tooth from the regular KemKem beds. However, I do have some suspicions of the root. Can anybody help
  16. I could have this very nice looking Trilobite ID "ogyginus corndensis (murchison 1839) from gilwern hill, powys, wales. lower llanvirn, darwilian, ordovician"but i have a doubt, the sample seems for me too perfect to be real, the matrix is very light brown, could it be a fake?I only have this picture ,an Opinion? The prodactylioceras davoie Ammonite lower Pliensbachien carixien Cote d'Or - France on the side looks good for me but the trilobite is too perfect to be real, isn't it?Museum shop trilo resine cast?
  17. I am very interested in purchasing this brittle star from Dorset, UK. It is not cheap. so just want to ask your opinion ☺️ do you think it is 100% natural and real? Thanks!
  18. Saw this tooth while browsing. Looked so off and maybe entirely reconstructed or fake. Any ideas?
  19. Hey! I have just been given this fossils, the previous owner could not find the certificate of authenticity, and I am not sure if it is real or not. It's very heavy, the teeth stand out a lot, and they feel smooth. Could please someone help us identify if it could be real? Thanks.
  20. Hi dear friends, I am thinking of purchasing a brittle star fossil like this. But the majority of brittle star fossils I have seen are orange color . So I am not sure why this one is in pink color. Do you think it is natural and genuine (why it is pink)?☺️thank you for your help in advance!
  21. Hello, experts, I need your help and advice. Do you think it is a real or fake fossil? The last one shows the original slab. Thanks! I appreciate!
  22. Hi all. A few days ago I found someone in a facebook group asking about a trilobite fossil if it was fake or real, to which everyone replied that it was fake, it made me very curious since I'm a beginner and I thought it was a good idea if in this section you can publish photos of fossils that you know are fake or replicas and what they rely on to reach that conclusion, in this way it serves as support for the fans, greetings to all and a hug. Here I leave the photos of the trilobite from the facebook post
  23. Here is a way to spend a gloomy winterish afternoon. Searching, (easily) finding and reporting fake fossil fabrications. This time the 'Shop for handmade, vintage, custom, and unique ... ' got some signals. These sellers are a real disgrace. Hope I saved some beginning fossil collectors from a bad start...
  24. This is described as a female Keichousaurus carrying an embryo in her womb. Apart from other possible issues with the specimen as such, is this conceivably possible? Were Keichos viviparous? And would the embryo's soft tissue be preserved?
  25. Hi everyone! I purchased this "Mosasaurus Skull" about a year ago. I'm certain that it's fake, but I was curious as to how bad of a fake it was (to humor me) and what kind of teeth these are. Thanks!
