  1. Hello, i saw this Megalodon tooth for sale today. The description says, its really heavy, but the seller doesnt know, If its real or not. So i basicly ask for two people. Its not known where it was found, but i think its real, the form matches, it has stripes and serrations. So what do you think about it ?
  2. Hello everyone! Ive been offered this Megalodon tooth, its from Indonesia and measures 6.29 inches. I'm assuming 20% of the root has been restored, not too sure though this is the first time of me trying to differentiate fakes in Megalodons.
  3. What do you guys think of this specimen? I looks better than most Keichosaurus specimens I've seen. I looks like it could be prepped more to expose more of the ribs etc. I'm debating on buying it and would like your feedback. Thanks
  4. I found this actually beautiful Erbenochile in a European auction house. However, I think all the little spines on the pleural lobes and cheek spines aren't real. What do you think about that?
  5. A 280 million year old fossil that purportedly showed early reptile development and supposedly showing rare soft tissue preservation has been shown to be paint over a carved skeleton..... Even museums can be fooled I guess. The should have posted it here in the us it real section first I guess! https://phys.org/news/2024-02-paleontological-analysis-renowned-fossil-thought.html

Famous fossil turns out to be fake

really cool fossil turns out to be really cool fake, but it had long puzzled scientists so it did not completely fool everybody, and may not even be an intentional attempt to deceive link for details
  7. Hello, i saw this Spinosaurus jaw on auction today. The tooth seems real, but the jaw looks like it would come straight up out of the mold, where the Sand was placed in. Found in Kemkem beds, morocco Sorry for the random floating fingers, i still dont know why sellers use their hand for measurement.
  8. Hello, i saw this big Spinosaurus tooth (14cm) on auction today, and it looks very good to me. But the root is a bit suspicious. It doesnt match with the colors and texture of the real tooth. Was a fake root formed to gain more centimeters to make it more valuebale ? It was found in the Kemkem beds of morocco.
  9. Ancient Fossil That Baffled Scientists For Decades Finally Reveals Its True Identity, Michelle Starr, Nature, February 16, 2024 280-Million-Year-Old Mystery Solved As Forged Fossil's "Skin" Identified As Paint The "soft tissues" of this partial forgery were painted on, but it isn't a total fake. 10. It can be very difficult to tell from pictures, a lot of the time, fossils that are misidentified, completely fake, composites, restored etc. This one is very easy to tell. I'm always looking for petrified wood on-line from a couple of the large auction sites and came across this piece. It made me laugh when I saw it, so I thought I would post it for other TFF members to enjoy. If you can't see immediately the multiple problems with the piece description, based upon the below pictures (there were many more pictures in the post), do not buy fossils on-line. At least the seller posted a good number of decent pictures from all angles, not the couple of blurry, grainy pictures that you normally would see for items like this. EDIT: Do not try a burn test on this piece to determine if it is a fossil or modern, unless you are burning it to heat your house. Item description: Petrified Wood Piece With A Real Marijuana Leaf Fossilized Marco Sr.
  11. Quite regularly, questions turn up about the authenticity of Keichosaurus fossil specimens. Until now, most, if not all, were natural, but mostly just very poorly prepped. Would you like to show off "real" fakes, casts or replicas of Keichosaurus? I would like to get a feeling for them, at least from pics. If there already exists such a topic somewhere else in the forum, please put a link in this topic. Thank you very much! Franz Bernhard
  12. Hello all, Recently I purchased a pair of tooth from a seller who sold me real keichousaurus and another real frog fossil based on forum opinions. He says this pair is from the same animal. I don’t even know if it’s Smilodon or Machairodus, nor do I have information about locality except that it was originally from China. Main reason I’m asking the forum is that as this is my first time owning saber cat teeth I’m not sure if they are always this light? 31-33 grams per piece only. It doesn’t seem cast with the great amount of detail. And about restoration it was broken and repaired, which is what the seller also said. Best wishes
  13. Hello , I saw this Spinosaurus jaw for sale today and wanted to know If thats a real one or a fake one (because there are so many fake ones on the Internet) . It looks real and fake at the same time to me , real because of that magnificant lip which many fake ones dont have , and fake because of the weird looking toothsockets and the man made looking demolition edge . What do you think ? Edit : I Just saw that one other member of the Forum posted about the same jaw a couple hours ago 😅
  14. I was hoping I could get some feedback on whether this fossil is real or not. The bones and scales definitely look real to me even under magnification. The thing that is throwing me is the matrix. It looks like plaster to me rather then rock. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated and if anyone knows the species that would be great as well.
  15. Hi guys, on a website I found this dinosaur footprint for sale. It was discovered in Germany. In your opinion is it real o fake? Thanks a lot!
  16. The seller knows nothing about this one. Anyone thinks it is good to acquire?
  17. The seller said its a real pterosaur tooth but im a bit suspicious can it come from another animal or just complete fake?
  18. Hi guys, I bring you this new topic regarding this 8cm Spinosaurus sp. claw. Do you think it's real or fare? I rely on you who are certainly more prepared than me ahahahahah. Thank you very much!
  19. Hi! I recently purchased the following Keichousaurus Hui. Although I have a modest fossil collection primarily consisting of Trilobites, this is my first Keichousaurus fossil. I had a chance to inspect the fossil first hand in the store before purchasing and while it looks quite nice to me, I would appreciate feedback from this group. IMHO, the piece is very attractive and presentable as a display piece (and it carried a correspondingly 'display piece' price!). I don't have any major concerns other than maybe the piece is too nice as it is nearly symmetrical, the detail is very fine, etc. Here is what I have observed: 1) The fossil is extremely 3D with well defined relief. Bones are thick, heavy, dark and well articulated. The fingers and toes in particular are very well defined. 2) The neck loop is very unique and the 'physical loop looks right' in that the bones go under and around each other in a believable way. 3) I did a very light acetone test on most bones, including the fingers and there was a bit of soil that came up. I did not see evidence of ink, nor did any of the bone detail wipe off. 4) The head is very detailed with needle like bones that might be teeth? 5) The matrix is soft and from the side is clearly layered. The back side of the matrix is flaking off and has a section that appears a little glossy... perhaps epoxy of some kind was used to shore up a weak back side? 6) There are thin cracks/striations that cross the specimen. These line up with the natural lines of the animal, so it does not appear that it is a composite. 7) There are no bubbles that I can see. 8) There appear to be a jumbled lump of bones in the gut... maybe the little guy's last meal? I have a ten day purchase guarantee from the seller and would love to keep this piece for display. Would appreciate the experts in this forum to help give me some confidence as to the quality of this piece, thank you! Jason
  20. I am really considering aquiring this claw. I would have to sell some stuff for it but I really want to be sure. Handclaw of a Suchomimus. Niger. Besides the obvious repair and prep it needs. Do you guys see issues or things to avoid?
  21. Hi, I know very little of fossils and bought these two spinosaurus teeth (did not pay much). Said to be from Kem kem. Afterwards I have realized that there are a lot of fake teeth on the market. One of the teeth I bought looks nice but maybe it has been repaired? The other one looks not so nice. Is it a mixture of sand and glue on it? Gluing three pieces together. Or can a tooth look like this when it is found? Even if they have been repaired and/or glued, they are still real fossils right? Both are about 2.5 inch. /Johan
  22. Came across with this cheap bargain hadrosaur egg, wondering if its actually a crushed egg or just rock and dirt concretion, the dealer gave me a video of it but im not sure if i can post it here so il just post the image.
  23. So these possible eggs (rocks) were acquired from a chinese dealer back in the 70's and somehow came to a local shop to me where they knew nothing about authenticating them. The information I was told is they are from the Hunan Province in China. They were told to have been placed in the matrix base. Measurements: Egg 1- 4"x4" Egg 2- 4"x4" Egg 3- 4.5"x4.5" I even got them CT scanned which you can see the kinda blurry results but i'm curious... Are they real?... If so what kind?
  24. Hello everyone! What do you think, this is real or fake? I discovered some little spots of black paint. It has cracks filled with glue too.
