My wife and I are planning a trip to Vermont, new Hampshire and Maine this fall. Does anyone know where to fossil hunt or somewhere to rock hunt. We love it all? Thank you in advance -
I am trying to find crabs or lobster at warden point but have had no luck yet. I was wondering if anyone had advice where to look, such as in the muddy areas or the shingle beach and if the area in the photo is a good area. Thank you for any help

Hi there, new to this site. Everyday me and my baby go for a morning stroll in the gulf of the etobicoke creek and I marvel at the shale sediment layers on the west cliff in between Eglington & Burhamthorpe. Being a curious scientist I tried googling it but came up short. The only thing I could written about it's formation was on this site and I've been Googling a lot of Latin words, seeing as how I'm new to the fossil world. Can anybody help answer this question? I'm amazed that the creek isn't a protected site if the shale is indeed over 460 million years old and has fossils!! Mind blown! I can't wait to take my baby fossil hunting when she's older!! Anything to instill the love of the great outdoors! Any tips on that would be greatly appreciated as well! Many thanks

Hey all! I'm Tobie, 29/m from Scotland and based in Lisbon since 2020. I work online as a freelance writer. I recently got into paleontology and have been exploring the Sintra coast collecting mostly late Cretaceous gastropods, ammonites, petrified wood and semi-precious stones, as well as various other organic bits and bobs (I make terrariums and decorative driftwood hangers). I really want to check out the Lourinhã formation for Jurassic fossils, as well as Arrábida, costa de Caparica, and eventually Algarve and the North (Serra da Estrela, maybe aire dos candeeiros). Anyone based in Lisbon or Portugal? Hit me up, would love to do a combined trip with one or two members. I have tools I can share, namely an Estwing geologist's hammer, a crack hammer, a smaller 1kg hammer and tons of good chisels. Bonus points if you have a bicycle suitable for off-road - great for reaching difficult locations and I tend to do trips with train + bike. Fall promises to be spectacular in many ways. If you dream of colors, you will like the following. I like fossil hunting in the fall, although it's not really hunting, the fossils are underwater so it's more like fishing. Anyway, this is one of my many trips to this place, it's not very far and it allows me to go for a weekend nature walk. This is Ordovician, the site is not as beautiful or rich in fossils as the other sites we see in this forum, but it is rich in brachiopods, crinoids, bryozoans and gastropods. This time, I chose a theme to showcase my special finds of the day. It's autumn in Quebec, we see all the colors! This year the province offers an extraordinary spectacle. Due to favorable conditions, autumn 2022 is marked by an extraordinary color season. This summer the trees have not been under great stress, which is favorable for an autumn with intense colors, the next few weeks should be just as much. Indeed, the season promises to be particularly hot and sufficiently sunny. According to the expert, clear nights will follow these beautiful days, which favors the coloring of the leaves. Enjoy! New member here, although I'm no stranger to the forum through researching past finds! 1st and foremost, this is such an amazing community and happy to finally have the time to hop on board. I've always considered myself a collector of sorts but have been fossil hunting seriously now for about a year. Been to multiple locations here in FL but I spend most of my time surface hunting the Gainesville creeks after rain. My favorite fossils are the ones' I haven't found yet but my favorite fossil finds to date would have to be my 4.1" Chub w/ feeding damage on the root, found amongst a dugong graveyard... followed closely by the little yellow guy in my profile pic (recent find and my first meg w/ zero feeding damage). I love to learn as much as possible about things that peak my interest and fossil hunting has become quite an addiction for me, so naturally I've read just about everything available online... but always hungry for more information. Looking forward to tapping into all of your collective knowledge and potentially making some new fossil hunting friends along the way! PS... I will be up in Greenville, NC & Summerville, SC for work soon and will create another topic in case anyone wants to meet up while I am in the area

Are there any Santa Margarita fm fossil sites that are still open/able to be collected from in and around the SF Bay Area? I want to try and hunt from the formation but all the classic sites, like bean creek, are now closed for collecting.

We are trying to pinpoint the location of the site so we can plan for a trip there. However, we are having some trouble figuring out its location. Hi! While I've also been fossil collecting, I am also volunteering for a local theatre company right now. This month, we will hopefully be leading a free acting program for youth in our community. Among my roles is writer/co-writer for the script that the youth will be performing. Ideas for what the script will be about have been scarce, but I do have one idea. I am thinking of making a vignette play (essentially an anthology of related scenes) about the lives of fossil hunters and palaeontologists. The scenes would be transcribed from various historical accounts and stories published in literature, but I would like to have some modern day scenes as well! If you are comfortable with it, I would really love to hear some of your craziest or most interesting stories from your lives of fossil hunting and collecting! Maybe it was a thrilling brush with danger while in the field, maybe it was an interaction between you and a cooky character, maybe it was a moment that cemented your love for fossils early in your life. I'll take anything! Regale me with your tales in the replies section or by sending them directly to me! Details, names, etc. may be changed or omitted, but I'd like to keep them as accurate as possible. Please also indicate if you would potentially be alright if your story made it into the production somehow. Thank you! -
Hi everyone! I was born in Portugal and I do most of my fossil hunting around the Algarve region and some in the Lisbon area. I have always been captivated by the many species that live on this planet and I am fascinated with the ability of the earth to preserve them as fossils. Recently I found a shark teeth that looks like it could be a fossil, so I decided to finally start posting on this site!

Hi everyone!!! I am a senior at Wilkes University pursuing my bachelors in geology. I’m from the Northeastern region of Pennsylvania where most of my fossils I collect are Devonian in age. That being said I just got back from a dig in North Dakota with @Jared C and the Fossil Excavators crew (post coming soon). I am also writing this post from Western Newfoundland, Canada, where I am currently working on my undergraduate thesis. I was lucky enough to find some great fossils here and am super excited to share (post also coming soon). I look forward to meeting a bunch of you wonderful people who share a likewise passion for fossils! Thank you Jared for finally getting me on this site! Hello, my name is Eva and I am from Eastern North Carolina. I have always had an affinity for all things sharks, especially fossil sharks teeth and from that sparked a general interest in other fossils and all things to be found in a riverbed. I am a collector, and "treasure hunter" not everything I value is considered valuable to everyone, but the thrill of finding neat objects is incredibly fulfilling to me.

A few finds from this weekend. Fortunate enough to have a cottage on Lake Erie, fairly close to Rock Point Provincial Park which is known for it's exposed fossils of a 350 million year old coral reef. About half were found on the beach itself and the other half in the crushed gravel part of the driveway. I'd imagine the beach will keep yielding new finds after every storm, here is hoping for it anyway.

Hello all! I have not been hunting for Fossils in a very long time. I am looking for the best places to go, even guide recommendations. I know you can go to the beaches, I have done this before yielding very little finds. I have had better luck diving for fossils off the coast. I live in Tampa Bay and I am willing to drive. I know you can go to Peace river, but not sure where to launch a kayak from. I have heard of the Bone Farm and I am seriously considering scheduling a half day hunt! Any help pointing me in the right direction is helpful! Thanks!

Hello all! I'm looking to do some more fossil hunting this summer and I would love to find a good spot for trilobites. I am in western Maryland, and am willing to travel up to 2 hours. Most of the sites I've searched so far have been largely dominated by brachiopods and crinoids (which are still cool), but I really would love to find other species. If anyone has a good site which has trilobites (or anything else super cool) please let me know!! Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! PS: I understand wanting to keep your spot secret, so if you don't want to post in this thread, don't hesitate to PM me!

I'm going to be taking a trip to the southwest (Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and possibly Texas) pretty soon, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to where I could go fossil hunting. I'll provide the specific areas we'll be traveling to; I also previously lived in Colorado and have already found a few good sites, but would definitely be open to any other suggestions. Colorado seems pretty promising with some good fossil quarries (Florrisant Fossil Hunting and the Morrison Museum), and I grew up with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as well as Dinosaur Ridge. I'll mostly be in the Denver and Colorado Springs areas. Utah is where I'm having a bit of trouble; I've heard it's definitely fossil country, but I can't find a lot of tours or places where you're actually able to take fossils home from. The main one I'm thinking of right now is the U-Dig Fossil Quarry, although I don't have any other ideas as to where we'll be going in Utah (wherever the fossils take us, I suppose!) so we're likely just going to plan around where we hear the best fossil sites are. New Mexico is a state we're visiting not just to find dinos, but to see the lovely Santa Fe, which is the main area we'll be near. We don't really have any plans as to where we can go for fossils yet, but I assume there might be some good spots we can hit along the way. Texas is kind of up in the air right now. I found some amazing fossils last time in Glen Rose, and intend to return there as long as my family is also willing to make the trip. It's a bit far, but if anyone knows of any other fossil sites that would be worth visiting around the Fort Worth/upper Texas area, I would love to hear about them. I have a feeling we'll be able to go back there as long as we don't stray too far into inner Texas (i.e. anything further down from Dallas). Hopefully this is in the right place, and I would love to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Does anybody know of some decent hunting sites in California? I know of Latham shale, but I'm not sure if it's very beginner friendly.

Anyone know of any spots I can go collecting? I’ve asked around a good bit but have found nothing of note. The only two places I know of is Hook head County Wexford which is definitely worth the trip and personally I have had some good finds there, the only other place I have found was a beach in County Cork beside spike island between Gobby beach and Lough Beg beach which as far as I’m aware is not known about by anyone really. So if you know of any decent places in Ireland let me know!
