Hello to all fellow fossil enthusiasts, great to meet you! I am a long time reader and now would like to join this great community. As a kid I have been collecting fossils (ammonites & belemnites) in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. Additionally, I very recently started to collect dinosaur fossils which I buy from fellow fossil hunters/preparators/collectors. It's kind of an expensive hobby and I get a lot of eye-rolling from my wife. However, the fossils put a big smile on my face every time I see them. :-) Thank you for having me here. Felix

Hello, new to fossil hunting. I have a small collection of dino teeth courtesy of ebay but I hope to dig up my own someday. Currently in the quality city of Chicago... Struggling artist going back to school to study geology and earth sciences, basically trying to fulfill a childhood dream way too late. The last ten years have been simply unproductive... Anyways, Reading some of the topics here, I feel like I can learn a lot from you guys. I post drawings on my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thin.the.herd/ I've drawn haunted houses, demons, ghosts and monsters but I'm slowly going into a strange paleoart direction lately and I plan on making a series of unique scenes involving prehistoric animals (or things resembling prehistoric animals).

Hello all, Found myself here after finding a piece of wood (a root?) eroding out of a 50-ft cliff on the beach in SoCal (usual recent beach bluff of the coastal Pacific Plate). The local Natural History Museum looked at it, gave me encouraging words (but, no, they don't do dendrology) and gave it a coat of Butvar 7.6 in an acetone carrier, and I was looking up that compound when I stumbled upon this site. This place looks like a keeper!

Hello, I have a question about fossils and secondary deposition.... I am assuming from what I have read that secondary deposition occurs when creature is preserved in sedimentary rock. Over time softer structures will decompose and be filled in by secondary sedimentary rock such as chert. If this does occur does this alter the specimen and it is considered not a fossil??? Thank you for your help! Kim

Hey group, first I'd like to say I'm sorry for my absence. I know I kind of dropped off the earth for awhile but I found my way back. Military duty called! So as my welcome home, my wife and kids and I are going to VA to do some hunting. I'm excited to finally see water again. I've never been to VA so any suggestions are welcome. Are there still auctions going on? I need to catch up! Tom

Would love to go collecting fossils this July. Trilobites and Ammonites are high on my list. Can anyone suggest places to go in New England or New York? I'm a geologist/micro-paleontologist (foraminifera) but have never collected macro-fossils in the North-east. I currently live in CT. Any guidance much appreciated.

Okay, today I have four more nodules to check. Again, some may be unfossiliferous. I'm expecting a few more jellies, and maybe a rock or two. One might be iron concretion, because of the crocodile skin pattern. Some , may need to be cleaned of calcite, the one from my last post is still being cleaned. If any more pictures are needed just let me know. Thanks and good luck!
