8cm. nicolletii zone Maastrichtian Late Cretaceous. I picked this up for a song recently on our favorite online auction house. I had to finish off the prep and do a small bit of modelling at the venter. The seller had no idea about the location, not even the state, but that really doesn't matter to me. I'm just happy to be able to add another of these gorgeous ammonites to my collection. -

(Posted in SD forum as well, feel free to move) I thought this would be an appropriate addition- my hope is that this map will allow forum users to plan trips to SD! Threw this thing together for you guys in some spare time at work. The map shows the extent of common fossil bearing strata in the state of South Dakota, as well as some "no-go" areas- reservations and the like. First time or second time in my intire fossil hunting life where I canceled on a trip. My son is a bit lucky cause he has a father who has connections. anyways, he took off for several days and went to a few different formations and I have to say,,, did extreamly well!!! Here are some photo's of some exraordinary fossils!!! Just a few pics,, more to come. RB Holy Cow!!! and yes, he's got the other side to make this a very large and complete Sphenodiscus!!! A super nice spheno!!! This one is going to be freakin gorgeous!!! Gunna take some work but this is the color that is good as it gets!!! Plus lots more in the rock! This one is the one I want!!! This one is special and is a very nice female spedini and a very special nicolleti! along with some other stuff!!! This looks to be a super nice medium sized sphenodiscus!!! This is a part of a big conc from the Pierre shale. Lots of stuff in these! Same concretion. Same concretion. A puzzle but gunna be fun. A bit beat up on the outside of the concretion, but could be a super good b-grade ammonite!!!?

Just got back from our (my youngest son and self) trip yesterday. It was a buying and hunting trip with me doing most of the buying and he doing most of the hunting. Right now Im in a bad way and feel as if I been beaten up! along with all the shocks I have everyday and having a hard time walking, but the thing is,,,, Im all smiles. It was an all day drive to get into South Dakota and our first stop was a guy who sells White River fossils. After loading up some BIG Tortoise's and lots of the oreodont stuff, my son also bought some just for practice, we then went and found a campground. Had some wiskey, good food and good times around the campfire. Very cold that night. Got up early and took off to stop number 2. We arrived at our 2nd stop about noon and made small talk for a short while and then took off to the middle of nowheresville. Very bumpy road for miles. Thats what really beat me up. But then we arrived at our destination. a little small creek but cuts right through some Fox Hills formation. I did make it down to some rocks and I did find a few small ammos and then had to sit and rest but the son took off and headed for a big cut bank and Tom was over a ridge at another site. Once we realized it was getting late, we went and picked up my son, he had found about 4 big packs worth of ammo material. It was all wrapped up so I could not see any of it. I still have not seen most of what was found. He just kept telling me, " your gunna like this stuff dad". We then went and picked Tom, he also had 2 heavy packs worth of ammo material. Went back to my freinds house, had some wiskey, traded stories and such, had a cheese burger fest and went to bed, (back of my truck). Very cold that night. The next day we went back to that little creek and my son and Tom finished up the last two cut banks and we headed off to one more cut bank. I made it down to this cut bank, found a couple of really nice rocks and then had to rest. It was always cold! and yet, my son was in the middle of the creek pulling out concretions, throwing them onto the bank and whacking them open. Most were junk, but some were SUPER NICE! Made it back to camp, (my freinds house), and was invited for dinner. A beautiful roast, mashed tatos and gravy, home made rolls, peas, corn and green beans and polished off with some homemade chocolate cake! Wow!!! I slept good that night, but again, it was very cold. once we loaded up all the rock into my little trailer, I then realized just how my material we had. I had no get up and go left in my truck! but i was all smiles on the trip home. Most of the ammo material we brought home i have not seen so its really gunna feel like christmas once I get started on this stuff. Oh, but I do have one rock for sure that I found that I think is going to be worthy of 'Fossil of The Month'. Woooooooop!!! Wooooooooop!!! RB

Somewhere, I posted about the receipt of this ammonite from @RJB‘s cast off pile. I finished up the prep yesterday. Unfortunately, I don’t know these ammonites well enough to give it a good ID. I know there’s someone here who does though. I gave up on the back ammonite as its quality wasn’t worth my time.

I aquired this rock last summer. Didn't think too much of it at first. Been working on it off and on for quite some time now but the more I worked on it the better it got! Believe me it took waaaaaaaaay too long! Im not sure but I think its hoploscaphites Nicoletti? Well,, and along with quite few little other squid critters. I was going to blast right through all the little stuff but decided to prep them out too. Not sure if that was a mistake or not. Because of those little critters it took me much longer than anticipated. But it came out purty dang good.. In fact,,, one of the best ive done in some time even though they are all small. Im actually quite happy with it. If I ever do sell this rock I might make as much as $8.00 per hour? Ha!!! But really, a super nice A-Grade multi specimen. RB

Hello, I found a fossil in the fox hills formation (Upper Cretaceous) around 6 miles east of Timber Lake, SD. I believe it is part of a dinosaur bone, or atleast a large vertebrate and was wondering if there was enough of the sample for a positive ID. The area in which I found it in is known to be a lagoonal deposition environment and I found the fossil in a thick bed of bivalves. Mosasaurs have been found in the formation but I'm not sure that this bone belongs to one of those. I tried to mostly clean it off, but there is still some encrustation.

Broke open a large concretion, here's what was inside. I really need to learn proper prepping technique, smash and look probably not the best way to reveal specimens. Any more experienced with suggestions for SD Fox Hills prepping?
