Today I stopped at the Gainesville Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida so my wife could see the Rainforest Butterfly Exhibit and walk among the butterflies. Well after doing that, I did what any good FF Member would do, I took a ton of pictures of their Fossil exhibits. It is a very nice museum and it is free, with the exception of special exhibits like the Butterflies. For your viewin pleasure, her are the pics- it will take a couple posts.

What do you guys think? Don't mind the line across the top, the piece unfortunately snapped in half and was repaired.

Hello everyone, I recently went fossil hunting in Rattlesnake Creek of Gainesville, Florida (Late Miocene) and uncovered many different fossils but three of them I am unsure of the identity of them. I believe one may be a type of vertebrae, but the others I can not place. The creek is shallow, relatively fast moving with a sandy bottom but many areas where gravel, fossils and stones accumulate. The first 4 pictures are of the same fossil, the next 3 of the the second, and the last 3 pictures of the last fossil. I would appreciate any attempts to help identify. Thank you very much!

Hi guys! I've been wondering for awhile if there's any possible way to ID some of the bone fragments that I have. Obviously some of them are just long flat fragments, but some of them seem to have identifying features or sockets/ joints. I know these pictures aren't the best, but if you have any thoughts on any of them please let me know. If you want more in-depth pictures of any of them I'd be happy to post them!

I live in Florida but it is still an hour and a half drive to Gainesville. I can't find out if the water is still high from the hurricane or not. Is there anyone that lives by that can tell me. Thank you

Just left Gainesville, found this oddity while we were hunting and I was hoping to see if anyone can help me ID it. We are still driving, so if better pictures are needed, please let me know. It is the size of a dime.

Hello everyone! My latest trip into the creeks of Gainesville proved quite successful, quite a few dozen shark teeth found, as well as some other questionable pieces. Can anyone confirm if these are fossils and if so what kind, or just stones? Collected from Rattlesnake Creek. Thank you and happy hunting!

Hello everyone! I am new to TFF and am very excited for my future in paleontology! On my first trip to Hogtown Creek in Gainesville, Florida I came across an unusual find. While I hear that shark teeth are plentiful, I instead found this small, porous inch long or so object. It was found on the side of the creek, partially buried in some sand. I am not sure what this could be, perhaps a fossil or just some sort of wood? If anyone has any tips on where to look for fossils in the Gainesville area (specifically near the University of Florida) please don't hesitate to let me know! Thank you and have a great day!

Another small tooth find from the creeks of Gainesville, Florida. I thought this was a small fragment of lemon shark tooth originally, but on closer inspection, I think it might be something different. This thing is tiny - only 1.0cm from root to tip. I thought it might be a basking shark but would love your help?

I've gone to Gainesville a few times and I haven't found many megalodon teeth, a bunch of fragments is about it. Anyways I'm going for a nice megalodon tooth. I'm not asking you guys to give up a spot but what kind of material should I look in to find a good preserved fossil? Like a good size megalodon or a horse tooth or anything of that nature. I have found that the rock rich spots have lots of smaller shark teeth but nothing big. I've seen some people look in a clay like material and find good preserved fossils but what should I look for? I need some help thanks

Good Afternoon everyone, I took a trip to Hogtown Creek in Gainesville Florida a few months ago and had pretty good success. Of my lot, I found a few fossils (pictured below) that I am having difficulties identifying. I don't want to mislabel them so I figured I'd turn to the experts. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The ruler's marks are centimeters (top) and inches (bottom). This is my first time posting so hopefully this format is acceptable. I labeled each of the findings to help with referencing them in the replies. I am happy to take additional photos upon request. Thank you

Where is a good spot in Gainesville Florida for Megalodon.
Joseph Lambert posted a topic in Questions & Answers
I have gone to Gainesville a couple times and I have found small shark teeth and megalodon fragments, but I would love to find a full megalodon tooth for myself. I have 2 megalodon teeth neither one I found and they are not fully complete. I'm asking if anyone can tell me of a good spot to go to. Or maybe even if someone like to meet me somewhere in Gainesville to go hunting. Thank you- 5 replies

I like Gainesville because I'm only about an hour away. But a lot of the places are picked clean. Can someone help me out and tell me how to use google maps to find remote places?

Hi guys. I went to Gainesville Saturday to check out the local creeks. We spent most of the day at Alfred A Ring park and then briefly explored a few of the less accessible creeks (Possum, Rattlesnake). Besides easily identifiable small shark teeth and ray mouth plates, etc, I found a large chunk of bone in Possum Creek and this a strange lumpy item in Hogtown Creek. I have no idea what the lumpy item is or if it's even a fossil. It's much rougher in texture than any fossil I've ever found, which makes me think it's not actually a fossil, but I was hoping you guys could help me ID it regardless. Thanks! Steph

Fossil hunting between Gainesville and Peace River
Joseph Lambert posted a topic in Questions & Answers
I was wondering I have went in the creeks of Gainesville and I've taken a trip to the Peace River. Is there anything in between them. I have been to rock springs but there isn't much there to find and they won't let you dig. I just want to find a place I can go and I don't have to drive over an hour to get to. Please anything helps. Thank you- 3 replies
