The Devonian period is known as "The Age of Fish", but could also be known as "The Age of Brachiopods." In the Early / Lower Devonian, brachiopods reached the height of their diversity towards its end in the Emsian. We see the ancestral groups occurring, lingulids, craniids, orthids, protorthids, pentamerids, rhynchonellids and strophomenids, as well as the later successful groups we have seen before such as atrypids, athyrids and orthotetids, plus the rise of spiriferids, spiriferinids and productids and the beginning of the terebratulids. Sorry, the quarter was all I could find for a scale reference. My 8 year old spotted this in an area with lots of small Devonian fossils (crinoids, etc.). I thought this looked a bit like a portion of a eurypterid, but I am very inexperienced, and would not be surprised to find that I am waaaaaay off base. Any help with an ID would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

I recently broke open a few slabs of rock I took home with me from Rickard Hill Road in Schoharie the last time I was there. The rock was very crystalline and hard to break and there weren’t a ton of fossils inside. I did manage to find a couple of trilo-bits that were very well preserved and very detailed. One of these bits I’m having a bit of trouble identifying. I’m almost certain it’s a trilobite pygidium but it looks like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The great preservation makes the details of the shell stand out. It is around 1cm long and wide.

I collected today in an exposure of the Helderberg Group in NY. The Helderberg Group is Lower Devonian, and rich in marine fossils. We found this in the mine and could not come up with any kind of ID. It is possibly part of a horned coral? Or a brachiopod? Please let me know your thoughts. I can also provide more photos if necessary, I tried to capture the different angles. It is an interesting thing.
