  10. Hardly anybody ever talks about the Cambrian fossils of the southern midcontinent (USA). They're super-underappreciated. Show us what you've got! Here's one to start us off: Thorax and pygidium of a trilobite, possibly Orygmaspis, typically referred to as "Orygmaspis cf. Orygmaspis llanoensis" but probably a different species altogether. Note the two pairs of macropleural spines marking the final thoracic segments. Davis Formation (late Cambrian: Furongian), south side of Highway 8, St. François County, Missouri.

  14. Hello everyone! I'm so happy to find such a thriving community here, and I'm especially excited to explore and possibly contribute to the reference museum. Earlier this year I moved really close to Lake Michigan, and now find myself a newly avid beach rockhound and fossil collector. I still don't know a lot but I love learning. So far I do know that a great deal of what I find are stromatoporoids (hence the username), along with some favocites, syringopora, halycites, tetracoral, crinoids, and brachiopods. The area where I live is silurian rock I think, and the composition of most of the fossils I collect is chalcedony rather than limestone. So, "agatized." They're often very colorful, have sharply preserved details contrasting parts that are translucent and opaque, or contain pockets of crystal formations. I don't find a lot of images of similar things online, so like I said, I'm excited to share. Looking forward to future discussions and also learning from people around the world Just for fun, here's a photo of the beach l visit most often for collecting:

    Tetragamma Tease

The last weekend of September, I decided to visit some of my central Texas sites. I had been looking for a tetragamma for some time - the first one I found was collected illegally, totally by mistake, on federal property. And it was far from a perfect specimen. Well, after a few years of being teased by broken tetragamma bits, I found this beauty. I believe this is a tetragamma streeuwitizi - collected from comanche peak limestone. Please forgive the situ pic, motion picture was activated, and the sun was too bright to tell that it was a poor quality image until later. Initially thought was a phymosoma sp., until I got home and realized it was a tetra - totally stoked!!! Pic #3 also shows that my tetra retained one of her (yes, I just humanized my urchin) spines!!! This is a first for me. Thanks to @Uncle Siphuncle for cluing me into the rarity of tetragamma a few years back.

  22. Again, here is another invertebrate I have not been able to identify. Either way, my original guess was a trilobite pygidium, until I reviewed the fossil under different lighting, and then saw that it matched no known trilobites from this formation. So I am at a loss here. It is Pridoli, Silurian. For anyone who is interested, this came from a recent excursion to the Leighton Formation. It was found in a layer that contained only Chonetes bastini brachiopods and a few ostracods - with some possible fish bits. In the pictures below, the fossil is shown under a combination of different lightings, to show the surface texture of the specimen. The first three pictures show the cast/original of the specimen, the last two show the external mold of it. The first picture is to show what the entire thing looks like. I am pretty certain that the round piece at the top right of the picture is part of the same specimen, but I cannot be sure. Thanks in advance for your help everyone!
  23. Looking for help with this Early Ordovician (Floian) trilobite from the Powell Dolostone of Arkansas, USA. The specimens (GRAY FIGURE below) were identified by Taylor (1968) as cf. Lannacus nericiensis Wiman, but that species (now a species of Megalaspides) doesn't seem like a great match, as the author notes in the paper. In fact, I'm not sure that proper Megalaspides even lived in North America. Last week, an Arkansan found another asaphide specimen (MAIZE AND BLUE FIGURE below) in these same rocks, which may or may not be the same species as the specimens described by Taylor. My question: Could these all be specimens of Isoteloides canalis? That species is already known from the Powell Dolostone in Missouri per Weller & St. Clair (1928) (as Isoteloides whitfieldi, now a subjective synonym of Isoteloides canalis). Or are these instead specimens of a distinct Powell asaphide, and if so, what genus & species? Thanks in advance. 1959 Treatise blurbs for Isoteloides and Megalaspides are in the BLACK AND WHITE FIGURE below. Here's Taylor (1968): https://scholarworks.uark.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3056&context=jaas Here's Weller & St. Clair (1928): https://share.mo.gov/nr/mgs/MGSData/Books/Volumes/Geology of Ste. Genevieve County/V-022.pdf GRAY FIGURE: MAIZE AND BLUE FIGURE: BLACK AND WHITE FIGURE:
