  1. My past two trips to Ramanessin Brook in Holmdel, NJ have been especially productive. Resulting in much larger teeth and much more diverse finds, Ramanessin has proven to be a much better spot than Big Brook for me. Here are the finds from the first trip: Many large anterior goblin shark teeth; a very large crow shark tooth; some very nice mackerel shark teeth; two pycnodont teeth; coral; a large ghost shrimp claw; a large ammonite fragment; a scallop with both shells intact; what I believe to be a fragment of a very large sawfish tooth (though it does seem especially striated for a sawfish) Finds from the second trip: More large goblin shark teeth (one pathological); another large crow; some very curvy mackerel shark teeth; small shark vert and a fragment of another; some sort of bony fish jaw; various sawfish crowns; a beaver tooth (more insight as to its age would be greatly appreciated); two Gastropod molds; ratfish jaw; I believe the two large fossils to the right are a coral imprint and possibly a lobster claw another pic of the beaver tooth; it seems hollow inside chewing surface seems worn; leads me to believe it is a modern adult beaver tooth up close pic of the lobster claw; noticeable “dots”
  2. Big Brook, NJ (Late Cretaceous): Rock, bone or other? Eight pictures attached.
  3. Hello! As I've gone through what I've collected this past summer, I'm finding really interesting things that I took home with me. These come from Niobrara County in Wyoming. I've taken pics of various angles of the fossils. Scale bar has inches (top) and cm (bottom). I'm not completely sure what some of these pieces are so any ideas or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance! Set 1: Vertebral Process Is it possible to ID a process this broken up? I'm thinking it's Edmonto but really holding out for Triceratops Set 2: Triangular bone A friend suggested it might be a Triceratops epoccipital so I wanted to see what you all think Set 3: Skull fragments? There's a lot of blood vessels that would've run through these bones. I'm thinking they might be Triceratops frill (haha can you tell I want some Trike material?) Any thoughts or should I leave the ID at unknown? Either way, they look really interesting. Set 4: Scute? I don't see an identifiable pattern on it but that line running through it makes me think turtle scute. Set 5: Unknown I'm not sure what these are. They both have a really interesting textures running on the surface and they are very thin. Set 6: Jaw piece? Finally, this neat piece that I found on an ant hill. Looks like a jaw piece to me but not holding my breath.

    Amber Xixia Basin, Xixia County, Henan Province, China Gaogou Formation (100.5-85.8 Ma) Total Weight: 10.1 grams Overview: These pieces are all unwashed and still have an extremely fine layer of sediment; each has high clarity and rich color, many are naturally droplet-shaped, and individual measurements range from 1 to 8 millimeters in length. A few fragments of coal are also present within the lot. Prevalence, Inclusions, Botanical Source: Amber itself is quite common within the Xixia Basin, hosting China's largest amber reserves, but despite this is very rarely seen on the market. It has also been studied very little, mostly due to the fact that biological inclusions have not been known to occur in it. An araucarian source for this amber was determined based on chemical analysis. Geological Setting, Associated Fossils, Age: Amber occurs as lenses and droplets within the middle unit of the Gaogou Fm., in fine-grained sandstone which is non-marine in origin; the middle unit measures up to 440 meters thick, and also contains dinosaur egg and bone fossils, of at least 6 different genera: the presence of some of these species indicate an age of early Late Cretaceous. At other nearby amber sites (Wuliqiao Town) the presence of ostracod and bivalve fossils indicate a slightly younger age (middle to upper Late Cretaceous). Plant and pollen fossils are not known from the amber-bearing strata at Wuliqiao Town. Given the alluvial setting the amber is found in, and the absence of plant macrofossils in the matrix, I feel it may be possible that the amber was redeposited making it somewhat older than its host strata.   10. There are two Tyrannosaurs described in the Hell Creek & Lance Formations, Tyrannosaurus rex and Nanotyrannus lancensis. Teeth from these animals are the number one sought after and coveted item by collectors. I don't understand all the hoopla and prices they command since my friends who I collect with know that I'm not a tooth person and prefer bones and claws. However I've been fortunate to find and acquire a few teeth and will post a several of my nicer ones. My two most favorite T-rex teeth are my biggest and smallest: The Baby (one of the rarest teeth around) is 1 1/8" and when I showed it to Bob Bakkar and Pete Larson they flipped and never had seen a Rex tooth so small and confirmed it was one. Collected from Garfield County, MT. My big Trex one is a rooted Premaxillary tooth at 6". One can see the replacement tooth hole at the bottom of the root T-rex teeth are big and my biggest crown, no root still on the matrix is this 4 5/8" monster. If your are interested none of these teeth have any work done to them. Minor crackfill to the root of the 6" tooth. Serrations are in pretty good shape. .
  11. Dakotaraptor steini was found in a multi-species bonebed in the Hell Creek Formation and lots of questions have been raised around this material since it was described. Elements of the holotype were found to belong to a turtle (furcula) and Anzu (Tibia) and questions raised on others. To make matters worst the holotype is not available for study..   14. Something that has been baffling me for a while is the fate of the European genera of Tyrannosauridae after the Mid Cretaceous. Multiple Tyrannosauridae genera including Proceratosaurus (Tyrannosauridae, England, Great Britain, Middle Jurassic (166 Million Years ago): ironically one of the earliest known Tyrannosauridae from the fossil record currently known), Eotyrannus (Tyrannosauridae, Wessex Formation, Isle of Wight, Early Cretaceous (136.4-125.45 Million Years ago)) and an unnamed Tyrannosauridae genera from Germany (Early Cretaceous (130.0-122.5 Million Years ago)) are known from Mesozoic deposits in Europe dating from the Middle Jurassic up to the Early Cretaceous.   15. Hello! Looking to ID this asian theropod tooth from the late cretaceous of Bayankhongor, Mongolia that is supposedly from Alioramus sp. The serrations are quite worn for this rooted tooth and are hard to see, the entire tooth measures 60mm Below I've attached some pictures, thanks in advance!
  16. I've had these crocodilian teeth from Niobrara County in the Lance Formation for a while now, but I'm not sure how if its possible to ID them beyond "Crocodilian tooth." I've generally heard that the "sharp" morphology are Borealosuchus teeth and the short bulbous teeth are Brachychampsa. Is that a safe rule to follow? I've also noticed that there are some slight differences in the teeth I have (hopefully the pics make it visibile). They're small, but the two on the lower left have noticeable raised striations (not sure what to call it). However, the one on the lower right and on the top are smooth. Is this just a difference in preservation? Identifiable traits to the species level? Positional characteristics? Individual variation? I'd like to hear any opinions on this. Thank you for your time

Main area of concern is the base of the horn where the outer layer has chipped away to reveal a white-ish interior that looks a bit like cement/plaster. There is a slight glint to the white material.     From Upper Campanian strata in the SE Pyrenees (Catalonia-Spain), I’ve found this piece that defies my knowledge of the zone’s invertebrates, as neither its size nor its shape fits anything I know. It seems an ostreid to me because the laminar structure and smooth surface of the shell, but the ostreids in the zone I’ve learned to ID, such as Amphidonte pyrenaicum, Amphidonte pliciferum, Pycnodonte vesicularis, Hyotissa semiplana, Agerostrea ungulata and Rastellum sp. are very different.   20. Hey all. I have an Igdamanosaurus agyptiacus tooth from the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian Stage) phosphate deposits of Morocco’s Oulad Abdoun Basin. It has one odd little spot with a maroon-covered gunk stuck to it, which I would like to gently clean off of it. The spot is on an area with intact enamel, right next to an area without enamel. First picture shows the spot I’m referring to, second and third are random pictures of this tooth, because why not? Fossil pictures are cool. It’s 1.27 inches wide if that matters, haha.
  21. Hello all, I bought a collection box (rikermount) for some of my late Cretaceous belemnites (Belemnitella and Belemnella (pachybelemnella) sp.). The fossils are 70-66 million years old (to be more detailed: 70-68 and/or 70-67 mya). Just like other fossils, belemnites can be stored quite well in this kind of vitrine/case. Also good for storing some shark teeth or other fossils like (flat) plant fossils/impressions. Other collectors that have rikermounts with fossils? (perhaps a picture?)
  22. Hi FF, I recently bought a "raptor tooth" that came from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco. I wanted to make an information card for it in the display (it’s a gift for a young paleontologist), but the description said “These small theropod dinosaurs from the Tegana Formation have yet to be described, primarily due to lack of articulated bone material having been found in the formation." Someone told me that it was most likely from an Abelisaur (rather than a raptor), and recommended that I ask for advice on this site. I'm just trying to find out more about the fossil and the best thing to put on the display card. This is part of the description they gave me: Late Cretaceous (100.5 million years ago - 66 million years ago) Taouz, Kem Kem Basin, Morocco Specimen Size: .73" long or 18.542mm I've attached some pictures of the tooth, and I hope that I followed the post rules correctly.     Unusual Fin spine ID

    Hello everyone , I have been trying to identify this fossil for a while now, nobody seems to know. This is a fin spine from the upper cretaceous (campanian) of israel. Recovered from phosphorite rich marine deposits. It reminds me of hybodontiformes, but its different as it lacks their characteristic serrations, and by that time period they should have gone extinct in the ocean. Any help would be incredible!!

I see lots of misidentified material and some with questionable localities that might fit other deposits. I would like to summarize what I believe is currently known and published. If you see any omissions or errors, please let me know. Not a lot of good maps out there to show the formation but here are two. In general, the exposures are in North Central Montana. Horner describes the formation on the western end is near the east end of the Sweetgrass Hills (very thick about 152 meters) and thins to less than 3 meters to its eastern edge Saco, MT. Bound by marine deposits Claggett Formation beneath and Bearpaw Fm above. More important, for collectors buying material is to be aware of the counties that have the majority of exposures they include but not exclusive to: Hill County, Blaine County, Phillips County, Western Part of Valley County, Fergus County, Wheatland County, Northern Valley County, Western Part of Garfied County, Big Horn County .You can see by the maps why a good provenance is vital to an ID. Stratigraphic range: Late Cretaceous, Middle to Upper Campanian 79.7 - 75.2 Ma Red _ Judith River Fm in Montana Faunal List: Updated 10/22/2022 (excludes Avialae) Lots of changes in recent years so older hard copy books are most likely out of date e.g. Dinosauria 2nd edition. This list was developed based on looking at a number of different reference sources, not Wikipedia, and like most lists some paleontologists or collectors may have different opinions, which is fine. The Judith deposit is very similar to those of the Belly River Group however you would not guess it by the variety of different dinosaurs that are described in this list particularly with the herbivores. Denver Fowler has even questioned if there is any justification to calling it Judith anymore since its continuous with Canadian Units. A new polycotylid plesiosaur has been recovered from the upper half of the upper member of the lower Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) Pierre Shale Formation of Wyoming: Serpentisuchops pfisterae, the snake-like crocodile face. The interesting aspect to this new discovery is that this polycotylid, contrary to most other known members of this clade (that is, all with the exception of the Turonian Thililua longicollis and Manemergus anguirostris from Morocco), has a elongated neck, convergent on those of elasmosauridae.
