  1. Hi fossil forum! I am hoping to get some opinions on the authenticity of these trilobite fossils. If this belongs somewhere else on the forum please let me know where so I can move it, or feel free to move it yourself. I know trilobites are often faked and that fakes are getting more sophisticated, and was looking for a second opinion and my local fossil seller/appraiser recommended this forum. I did tests myself (eye detail, uv reactivity, tooth test) and am fairly confident, but would love a second opinion. I would be happy to bring them to someone in the Toronto area in person if anyone here is in the area as well. If anyone wants pictures at other angles please let me know. Thanks in advance!

    Otodus body size to vertebrae

Recently, after going to my favorite fossil store, I aquired a Otodus Obliquus vertebrae. It came from a formation in Morocco, and is approximately 54 million years old, from the pliocene. Otodus is an extinct mackerel shark, related to the far larger O. Megalodon. The fossil is approximately 10.5 centimeters or 4.13 inches. I was wondering how large the shark would be relative to this vertebrae (assuming this was the largest vertebrae from the shark.)
  4. Hello everybody! Someone offered me a Scabrella to buy... As it is a rare trilobite I have doubts about its authenticity. Can you help me? Please!
  5. Hi. I recently went to a fossil show. I didn't saw anything i really liked but my wife saw these trilobites and wanted them. So i got them as a gift for her. Normally she's not in to fossils. So i wanted to know how much of these are real or repaired. If u need more pics i can take some but we dont have good daylight but i will try Thanks
  6. Hello, this is a "mosasaur jaw" from Morocco, I bought it knowing that the jaw was super suspicious and just considered it as a display for the teeth. But on further examination, as you can see on the close up photo, the texture of the jaw bone seems too good for a cast (at least in my opinion and comparing it to other moroccan jaws I saw). Can it be a reconstructed real jaw? It's a crocodile jaw or similar? Or a really good cast? What do you think?
  7. This is the fossil that I cherish the most now. I believed it was genuine, but the price I paid for it was too cheap. Made in Morocco Ladies and gentlemen, please tell me the identity of my treasure. "Whether this is a fake or not, I will treasure this fossil that gave me so much excitement and excitement."
  8. I no longer know if there is a genuine Spinosaurus claw in this world. fake. fake. fake. full of fakes. I honestly want to take it to my grave. However, there are only fakes and the real thing can not be found at all. Do real Spinosaurus claws exist in this world?
  9. Hello everyone, I am very glad to have found this forum, as I have no knowledge at all about fossils. I got a fossil and wonder if it's real. The information I was given: It is meant to be a crocodile tooth from Morocco of the eocene. The person I got it from bought it 15 years ago from moroccan sellers in Germany. It was the first time they brought crocodile teeth with them (but other fossils before). Do you think it is real? To me it looks as if the crocodile went to the dentist's just a few weeks ago? If it's a real fossil I also would be very glad to get an ID - shoud I open another thread in the ID section? Thank you in advance!! Laleja
  10. Hi. I was wondering if anyone knows about the laws regarding purchase of dinosaur fossils from Morocco, Niger or other African locations. It seems that they could be legally prohibited but these are some of the most common locations I see fossils for sale from. Also many places selling them are large legit companies that say they were legally collected. I have read that it sounds like Morocco does have ability to export but only with certain registered dealers but I’m not sure. I was wondering this because I would like to add fossils from some of these dinosaurs to my collection but I don’t want to do anything sketchy. Thanks in advance for any info on this!
  11. Hi everyone! I was recently gifted this trilobite fossil, but after taking a look at it, it seems as though it may not be authentic. Although I don’t see obvious evidence of resin casting, i.e. air bubbles, the specimen does lack lots of clear detail in the head and in the eyes. I’m hoping it’s just a bad prep job, but realistically I’m leaning towards it being a fake as I’ve seen many Moroccan fabrications similar to this one. Any input would be greatly appreciated and thank you all so much for your help!

    trilobite species ID

Hi. Another post from me about trilos! I bought this a while back and it was labelled as Gerastos granulosus, but I have another of this species and it certainly isn’t that, ... any clues? Some sort of Phacops ?
  13. Are these real Spinosaurus claws? Made in Morocco If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you so much to everyone on the forums. ou

Is this a genuine deltadromeus tooth? Mesozoic Era Late Cretaceous Period ▓Albian ~ Cenomanian Morocco Sahara Kem Kem Basin Size about 60mm If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you so much to everyone on the forums.
  15. Hey all. I have an Igdamanosaurus agyptiacus tooth from the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian Stage) phosphate deposits of Morocco’s Oulad Abdoun Basin. It has one odd little spot with a maroon-covered gunk stuck to it, which I would like to gently clean off of it. The spot is on an area with intact enamel, right next to an area without enamel. First picture shows the spot I’m referring to, second and third are random pictures of this tooth, because why not? Fossil pictures are cool. It’s 1.27 inches wide if that matters, haha.

    Are these real Spinosaurus claws?

Are these real Spinosaurus claws? This is a spinosaurus claw that I own. Everyone, please tell me. It's pretty nerve-wracking, but I'll post it.
  17. This important new paper from Allart Van Viersen and Gerry Kloc @GerryK should cause an indeterminable number of revised labels around the globe! Hollardops mesocristatus (Le Maître, 1952) has been restricted to the holotype from the Chefar el Ahmar Formation, Algeria. "The replacement of the unidentifiable name-bearing type of H. mesocristatus with the poorly preserved paratype of evenly imprecise geographic and stratigraphic provenance would be pointless. Therefore, we prefer to restrict H. mesocristatus to the holotype. This is a rigorous measure but one that enables the objective recognition of distinct species, albeit with the knowledge that one of these might potentially belong to H. mesocristatus when future collections at the type locality are conducted. Still, that would require the near-impossible identification of the specific bank that the holotype was extracted from as well as sufficient specimens to span a range of holaspid instars, in order to validate an unambiguous relationship with the type." This is the revised and updated list of the valid species from Morocco: Hollardops aithassainorum – Chatterton, Fortey, Brett, Gibb & McKellar, 2006 (lower Eifelian, Morocco) Hollardops angustifrons – Van Viersen & Kloc, 2022 (upper Emsian, Morocco) Hollardops boudibensis – Morzadec, 1997 (upper Emsian, Morocco) Hollardops burtandmimiae – (Lieberman & Kloc, 1997)(upper Emsian?, Morocco) Hollardops hyfinkeli (Lieberman & Kloc, 1997) (upper Emsian?, Morocco) Hollardops klugi – Van Viersen & Kloc, 2022 (lower Emsian, Morocco) Hollardops kyriarchos – Van Viersen & Kloc, 2022 (upper Emsian, Morocco) Hollardops luscus – Van Viersen & Kloc, 2022 (upper Emsian, Morocco) Hollardops multatuli – Van Viersen & Kloc, 2022 (upper Emsian, Morocco) Van Viersen, A.P., Kloc, G.J., 2022 Functional Morphology, Coaptation and Palaeoecology of Hollardops (Trilobita, Acastidae), With Descriptions of New Species and Two New Genera from the Devonian of Morocco. Metacanthina issoumourensis

This is a beautiful, 4.7cm long specimen of Metacanthina issoumourensis (Morzadec, 2001), a fairly common species from the Devonian of Morocco. It was quarried near Lghaft. There has been light restoration on the glabella, but otherwise the shell is intact.

What is it? Unidentified Moroccan Tooth

I got this tooth and a few others in trade from a geologist in Southern Morocco probably close to twenty years ago. At the time he sent me a number of teeth, all identified as mosasaur. This one always bothered me with that id as it looks quite a bit different from the other mosasaur teeth. It has a more compressed oval cross section than most of the mosasaur teeth I have had in the past. It also appears to have a bit of serration on the edges. Supposedly location given to me: Timhdite, Morocco, possible Oil Shales The geologist was working for oil companies in the area at the time. I have long ago lost the contact information so can't contact him for further information. Also wondering about the color. All the teeth I got from him were pure black, reminding me almost of the California tar pit colors. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    trilobite species identification

can anyone help me identify this trilobite? it will soon be mine but it was mislabelled as Morocconites malladoides which it’s certainly isn’t. have been told it might be a Reedops cephalotes
  22. Hi FF, I recently bought a "raptor tooth" that came from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco. I wanted to make an information card for it in the display (it’s a gift for a young paleontologist), but the description said “These small theropod dinosaurs from the Tegana Formation have yet to be described, primarily due to lack of articulated bone material having been found in the formation." Someone told me that it was most likely from an Abelisaur (rather than a raptor), and recommended that I ask for advice on this site. I'm just trying to find out more about the fossil and the best thing to put on the display card. This is part of the description they gave me: Late Cretaceous (100.5 million years ago - 66 million years ago) Taouz, Kem Kem Basin, Morocco Specimen Size: .73" long or 18.542mm I've attached some pictures of the tooth, and I hope that I followed the post rules correctly. Any advice you have would be appreciated. Thank you! DG

    Bones from Ait Hani, Morocco

Hi, These two bones come from Ait Hani, Morocco and I was hoping someone could help me with the identification of them. Thanks!
  24. Interesting paper. Paul Sereno et al. challenge the hypothesis that Spinosaurus was fully aquatic presented in Ibrahim et al. 2020b paper. They also have a different skeletal reconstruction to support their position. https://elifesciences.org/articles/80092 Spinosaurus and Suchomimus Differences between the two skeletal reconstructions
  25. When visiting the region of Erfoud in Morocco, we got some years ago a very unusual starfish. Devonian chalk, perhaps the layers with Cupressocrinites? Do not exactly know. It looks like Helianthaster, but there has nothing been published about starfishes like this one. What do you think? Does anyone know this starfish or has new literature about them? Size is around 10 - 12 cm (original diameter)
