  1. I had a fun hunt today at NSR. I found a nice variety of fossils. My buddy made a friend with a small wild boar. We hiked 4 miles all together. Here's some pics of my finds. Mosasaur jaw section, Xiphactinus jaw section, Enchodus jaws and teeth, Shark teeth, Fish verts, Mosasaur tooth and verts, Tylosaur jaw fragment, Mystery bone and Old marble. The Mosasaur tooth was my first find of the day.
  2. I hit 3 spots on NSR yesterday with a friend. We waded some waist deep water and mud but had a good day and some good finds. We found a nice variety of fossils from Pleistocene to Cretaceous. The killer Dalton artifact was the highlight of my day. The last pic is my friends finds for the day. Can anyone ID the large tooth on the bottom left of the last pic?

    Mosasaur vertebra

Found in a gravel bar in the North Sulphur River bed. Approximately 1000 ft. SW of the base of the concrete staircase at Pete Patterson Fossil Park in Ladonia, Texas. Specimen identified by Michael Polcyn of Southern Methodist University.

North Sulphur River Mosasuar verts, Turtle shell and huge baculites.
  5. Short wet NSR hunt this morning. I had to walk a long ways to find these few little verts. I did have the place to myself lol.
  6. Short and hot 2 hr hunt at the North Sulphur River Texas. I found a nice variety of items. Mosasaur Vert, Possible Fish Rib, Biface Preform Artifact, Mastodon Tooth Enamel. It was so hot the rocks were burning the soles of my feet through my dive boots lol.
  7. Hi! Since we wind up at the North Sulphur River every week or two, I thought I'd consolidate postings into a single post. July 4th - VERTEBRAE DAY Although I love hunting with my two sons (age 8 and 9), I always have better finds when I go out by myself. Don't know if it's better concentration or just that without the Daddy Role I stay longer than I should. Anyway, my July 4th trip yielded the items below. I'll pull a couple of the items for better pics and scales as time permits. There's a set of about a dozen dark gray vertebrae (smaller with rounded ends - pleisiosaur?) pulling out about a 1/3 in from the southern bank and stretched out over a 1/2 mile. I found several this trip, some on earlier trips, and know a couple that found a couple in the same locale while we hunted downstream. I've got a couple of puzzlers I'll note below and put better pics asap. thanks for checking it out! (oh yeah, parden the very excited Lego character peeking through the drying towel. I took quick pics when I got back rather than on our copy stand and once I saw his enthusiasm, I had to keep him in!) M

Items found 2016-07-04 on North Sulphur River. Several Vertebrae found same distance from bank along a 1/2 mile stretch. Matching color and size indicate them coming from a single specimen. I know of 3 others matching that were found in the same location in the last month. Late Cretaceous - Taylor Group- Ozan Formation

  15. Decided to play hookie for a couple of hours and brave the heat for a trip to the North Sulphur today. There has been no rain for a couple of weeks but I decided to try my luck anyway. I had very low expectations though my goal was to find my first mossy vert and possibly an arrowhead as well though I figured my expectations may be a stretch. The morning was nice but it heated up quickly. My goal was to walk at least a mile before seriously hunting trying to get away from the heaviest hit areas. It paid off. Though nothing I found was mind blowing, I did happen upon a few cool finds and a few items I can't Id.
  16. Saturday morning, 6-4-16. After a night at work, I decided to stop by the North Sulphur River on my way home & get a little fossil hunting in. I headed for the fossil park at Ladonia, TX, as the giant stairs there were my easiest option for getting into & out of the river. Recent rains had caused to river to crest at over 20 feet deep a few day earlier. It was now down to about knee-deep at the worst in Ladonia. (At least, in the areas that I checked. ALWAYS check for deep water, deep mud, or the two combined before you set foot in an area!) The overcast day & recent high water had obviously scared everyone off fossil hunting that day. I was the only person there, and NO footprints to be seen in the riverbed! I started carefully picking my way out to the visible gravel bars. Upon getting there, I found that a lot of shale slabs had been torn loose by the recent flooding, covering much of the gravel bars. This makes it hard to spot any finds! My first finds were these odd bone scraps, 1, 2 and 3. (Continued... )
