I had a good day fossil hunting at the North Sulphur River Texas. I found a nice variety of Xiphactinus, Mosasaur, Plesiosaur, Shark, Mastodon, Rudists, Ammonite, and Coprolite full of bones.

I know there are lots of posts of late on the North Sulphur River, but with good reason! It's such an awesome locality and we're so lucky to have it for at least a few more years before it dives under the new reservoir waters. I got away Sunday afternoon by myself and decided to head upstream from the 2990 bridge instead of the area between the fossil park and 2990. Didn't see another soul all day and even though I didn't see the quantity of finds that I normally do around 34, I had some good pieces and a great Zen day of quite hunting. Water was 1.88 feet deep down at Cooper and 12 hours later, it was 22 feet deep. Now, it's back down to under 6 feet and will be back to 2 in a day or so if it doesn't keep pouring in. So, we've got a whole new river to hunt!! What a great place. Although I didn't have quite the hunting day that Delyla (fossiladdict) did, I always enjoy seeing the predation (or scavenging) marks on bones and I found 7 with those on the trip. I've posted a gallery and I'll post in pieces below. Thanks for viewing and have a great day! M This guy is either the largest Baculite whorl I've seen yet, or the first phosphatized ammonite I've found. Unfortunately, only one side is preserved, but it's got awesome sutures.

Love this river! Hunted the river at 1.88 feet. 12 hours later, it was at 22 feet. 12 more hours later, it's back at less than 6 feet. It will be a whole new river to hunt in a day or so. Constant renewal.© Mitchell Moore

A curiosity. Either the largest Baculite swirl I've seen, or the first phosphatized Ammonite I've seen. Most Baculite swirls are very small (<1cm). Either way, it has beautiful sutures.© Mitchell Moore
