There is a spot in the Peace, not far upstream of the Canoe Outpost, that yields relatively large quantities of the sand dollar shown in the photo below. I have these 2 relatively good examples and 3 more partials stuck together in a block. All are of nearly identical size. I had assumed Miocene based on the source, but the the publication from UF on "Pliocene and Pleistocene Echinoids" has the only sand dollars coming close. The closest matching in shape is Encope michelini, but the sample is twice the size of my examples. Anyone have experience with these?

I'm putting out an open call for any collectors who have any reasonably complete tortoise or turtle material from the Peace River (or its tributaries) or even possibly Bone Valley material from the quarries in the area. I'm working with Jason Bourque in the fossil prep lab on the campus of UF here in Gainesville (presently working on an 18 Ma gator skull from the Thomas Farm site). Jason is reassembling some turtle specimens that had been collected in Florida that have been languishing in the collection for decades. He's presently reassembling a giant tortoise plastron collected in the 1980s.

Found this partial mammoth tooth in June 2020 in the same Wauchula area of the peace was digging in mostly sand with some fine gravel. It is worn smooth probably from sand erosion over thousands of years or maybe mammoth was very old and had worn down its teeth ? Found it like 2 1/2 to 3 feet deep and even though its only part of a tooth was elated when it showed up in my screen. Looking at this stuff is making me wish the river was low enough to go out now especially with it being so hot would be nice to be waist deep in the river. Im sorry pic isnt very sharp but girl friend isnt here and h

Anywhere Port Charlotte to grab micro-matrix? (coupla pics)
Mignoffo posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
My son will be vacationing in Florida for the next week and a half with his grangmother. Since the Peace River will be off limits for fossil collecting due to seasonal high water flow, I was hoping he could grab a gallon of micro-fossil matrix from along the river. Does anyone know any sites along the Peace River or any other sites I suppose where I could send them to grab a scoop or two? One positive might be submerged areas might give access to spots that normally would be considered bank and technically illegal to scoop. Thank you for any help. Pics are just a few of many small- 1 reply

I was out today with a friend hunting the Peace River. You might ask how. 90% of the river is way too deep and dangerous to hunt. I have a temperamental back which does not allow me to hunt areas that are less than knee deep. During season, there are many isolated areas like that, and for likely places we dig probe holes to determine if the area contains fossils. We identify areas which might be hunt-able when the river is 4 feet above normal. So a lot of small shark, ray teeth, mostly broken and a few finds that make the trip worthwhile.. On this day, a posterior Meg, a chunk of an

I went to peace river a couple years ago one time. Went to one park - was pretty much over picked with craters everywhere. Found those in one illegal dug banks pit. They're the most easily identified pieces I could find - rest was just bone pieces, ark shell molds, and pieces of shells. Second picture is when I went to key west one time there was calcite pieces spread all over the beach - not too far from the fort. Two pieces of calcite had strong resembles to teeth. Third picture is the best I could find from the pieces of bones that I had found at peace river.

I recently purchased a "Pay Dirt" box from forum member MikeG @Bone Daddy's site for a little something to do. In it was this piece of wood. Originally it was a very dark brown, almost black color (imagine that from Peace River). Anyway, I went over the front of it lightly with a 600 grit sanding cloth & the color lightened up nicely. Filed & polished a bit of the upper end & found that it may not be regular wood. Measures 7 cm long by 2.5 cm at it's widest. First 2 pics are the front & back. Pics 3, 4 & 5 are the polished bit at 60x, 75x & 100x respectively. Not used t

Hi again yall, I have another set of pictures of something I found that I am not at all sure what it is, hope it's at least a fossil this time, haha. My first guess is some kind of shell from a turtle but again, huge newbie who probably has another cool rock to add to her collection. It is very nice to hold in your palm because of the shape and texture. Tried to get clear photos with a pen for size, found it in Arcadia Florida in the Peace River. Thanks as always!

Found in Desoto County FL, in the Peace River. Just started fossiling and I'm high-key worried I may have just found a cool rock and not a fossil, haha. Help would be appreciated. Took the photos next to a pen for size and tried to get as crisp and well lit a photo as I could. Thanks in advance!

I was out Monday unsuccessfully looking for inverts, but came back with a ton of shark teeth and a few of the more common vertebrate finds. would appreciate an ID id anyone would like to take a chance. The overall length is 101 mm. I'm thinking a dog sized animal but have no clue. Thanks for the look see!

Hey all, I've recently been to the Peace River and found some things I'd love help identifying. I've taken two angles of everything to hopefully show the detail neccessary. I'd be so happy for anyone's thoughts! My thoughts are: #1 no idea #2. Dugong bone #3. no idea #4. Turtle? #5. Petrified wood or bone? #6. Turtle shell? I wasn't sure if it could be that thick (over 1/2 an inch). #7 antler? #8. Bone or sloth tooth?

This fossil is about an inch long and is quite thin. It reminds me of a pelvis bone. Thanks

Apparently I'm supposed to find odd things in this Peace River, Gardner locality matrix chunk. Like the other, I'm at a loss. 2 different items yet both the same.. I think. Pics labeled 1 & 2 are one item, 2 being an end view. Pics 3, 4 & 5 are another item. Pic 4 is an end view from the lower section of pic 3 & 5 is an end view of the upper section. Item in pic 1 is 2 mm long by 1.5 mm wide. 2nd item is 2 mm long by 3 mm wide. Any ideas? Pics taken at 90 x magnification.

A couple years ago I got some fossils & a chunk of matrix from @Bone Daddy. The matrix was from the Gardner locality on the Peace River. I had picked at it off & on until I ended up with a hard block. Recently I soaked it in some water for a day, then let it dry some & started trying to break it up. I found some items that I'm not quite sure what to make of. The largest piece is 9 mm long x 6 mm at the widest & wedge shaped. The other 2 pieces were with it. Any idea's what I found? The pics are at 30 x magnification using a Dino-Lite w/ photo stacking.
