I was in Moab, Utah last week and stopped in at the Moab Rock Shop. They had lots of fossils so I picked up this nice little ammonite about 17 mm diameter for a few dollars. It was labeled as an Orthosphinctes from the Jurassic of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, but I'm not convinced. I can't find much online about Orthosphinctes but what I do find shows the whorl cross section as being much more oval in shape. I found the thread below from 2014 but it doesn't seem to have answered the poster's original question of Orthosphinctes vs. Perisphinctes. Can anyone help?

I have this ammonite fossil from the genus Perisphinctes, and I would like to know the species. I bought it online from a guy who said it was from a site (which I do not remember) in Madagascar. Can someone help me?

Hi there guys, I got this ammonite as part of a set from Madagascar. I would like to know if this is a Perisphinctes. What caught my attention is that it seems to be more "larger" than the regular Perisphinctes I'm used to, at least. Let me know your thoughts.

I'm thinking about buying this, I love sliced ammonites and have never seen one quite like this one, is this actually rare at all?

This fossil is an Ammonite which I think is Perisphinctes. This fossil came from the santiago formation in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, which is middle Oxfordian.The sanTiago formation is below the Taman formation which is were the Ochetoceras came from. There has been fossil coming out of the formation which are Perisphinctes (Middle Oxfordian ammonite biostratigraphy of the Lower Santiago Formation at Taman, San Luis Potosi, Mexico — with notes on Mexico–Caribbean ochetoceratins) or Bioestratigrafía de amonitas del Oxfordiano medio de la parte basal de la Formación Santiago en Tamán, San Luis Potosí, México – con notas sobre ochetoceratinos de México y el Caribe, in Spanish. Hi Everyone, I purchased this ammonite from a shop in Colorado several years ago. The only identification they provided was that it was an ammonite from Morocco. I believe them because the opening has been cut flat and filled in like ammonites from Morocco typically are. I have tentatively identified it as a Dactylioceras but I'm not sure, another possibility could be Perisphinctes. There also could be other possibilities, too. Since I don't have information on where it was collected, I don't know what age it comes from. I think I read an older post on this forum that the ribs on Dactylioceras only split in two, but on Perisphinctes they sometimes split into three, but I haven't been able to find that post again (Ludwigia, I seem to remember you were the one who made that comment). This one looks like some of the ribs split into 3, which might suggest Perisphinctes. Also I've included a photo showing a suture line, which I understand can be used to make an identification, but I haven't found anything on the web that gives examples of suture lines for different families. Can anyone help with the identification? Thanks for the help, this forum is amazing!
