Oreodont and Camel: Real or Fabricated?
RaideReX posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Good day everyone, I'm looking into these two partial mammal skulls: An oreodont Merycoidodon and a Camel Poebrotherium. I'd like some help to find out if these are all real or have been partially fabricated, enhanced, composited, total fakes. Hello evereybody, I dont know if this is the right place to post this but I would be interested to learn more about mosasaur skull three-dimensional anatomy. Do someone know where it is possible to buy accurate mosasaur's skull cast? I am looking for something more educational than decorative and ideally not too big. I know that there are plenty of interesting stuffs on the web but from my experience in human medecine nothing is as good as a three-dimentional model to understand complex anatomical structure like the skull. Thanks for helping!

I found this on the Yellowstone River after high water, it had washed onto an island on the river and gotten caught in an old tree that was also beached on the island. It is 22" from tip to tip and heavier than I would have expected as if it has begun mineralization. The base of the horn cones are 3 1/8" at their largest dimension. Could this be a Bison Antiquus? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Oreodont Skull Restoration
Bguild posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi All, I came across this Merycoidodon Oreodont Skull and was curious as to the actual level of restoration that's been done. As far as I can tell the grey putty filling is where work has been done to stabilize the skull, but bones haven't been recreated. Am I missing anything else? Thanks! -Barret -
Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help or ideas. Earlier this summer my friend moved to South Dakota and purchased a home. A few days ago he was cleaning out a shed on the property and found a cardboard box filled with the fossils seen below. It is unknown if the prior owner had found these on the property or if they had been purchased elsewhere. So unfortunately he has no idea where or when these were originally found. Neither of us have much experience in this but obviously fossils such as these catch your attention! If anyone wants or needs additional pictures let me know and I will see if he can send more. I have included mostly pictures of the skull and teeth as I figured they would likely be most helpful for identification. It is assumed all these pieces belong together but it is possible it is just a random collection. The pictures in order are: skull facing front, skull bottom, skull side (close up), three different angles of the jaw/teeth, and then one pic of all the pieces together with a ruler to get a ballpark idea of sizing. Hope you guys enjoy the pics and hopefully someone out there has some guesses. Thanks!

Came across this while my son and I were metal detecting. I saw some teeth in a big clump of dirt and sand so we took it home and I let it sit in water about 7 minutes and realized it was a fossil. Could anyone give me an idea what it is?

Matching the coloration of a woolly rhino skull?
SimpleCollector100 posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
I am interested in getting a woolly rhino skull. I found one but the colorations are slightly off since they are from two different animals. Is it difficult to have the colors match? Maybe with some type of staining that wouldn't be too hard and degrade/damage the actual bone? Or is whitening a better approach? Thank you- 9 replies

Saber Toothed skull, real?
SimpleCollector100 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Mostly I'm just curious, I want to buy one one day but I dont know how to tell a fake form the real thing.. I thought it would look more like real bone but the main characteristics of real bone seem to be gone.. Restoration to lower jaw. From reading another thread here, I get the sense the "fakes" are REALLY REALLY good. If so is there a place to get one that is this good and doesn't cost as much (and is sold as a fake/reproduction)? Thank you- 13 replies

I found that a sabertooth skull could be in "unprepared" form in some "matrix" rock? This seems to make it less valuable/cheaper. When it's pure bone, is this a pretty tedious process to clean up? Any videos that would be good to research? Thank you

Are Saber Tooth Cat fossil skulls bone or rock?
SimpleCollector100 posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I was wondering if the saber tooth can be found in real bone or would it be only in rock ? It seems they existed 11,000 years ago so that means they could be real bone and not just rock? Thank you- 2 replies

Hello there, since i dont know anything about fossils in general i'd like to ask for a first opinion, if the 'stone' i found could be some kind of fossil. the interesting fact about this is, that i'm 99% sure that this is some kind of biological mass turned into stone, because it fits every aspect a small jaw, including nerves, teeth and the bone. Im curious about the material (what it turned into) and how old it might be. Thank you

Hey y'all, I have some part, probably, Mawsonia. I think the third thing in the top is an angular. The last thing, i think, is the top part of a skull but not from mawsonia but another fish like. Can someone tell me if I am looking in the right direction? Oh, the distance between the 4 linea is 1 cm each. Thank you

After the Velociraptor skull, I finally finished another very long project: the baby T. rex skull designed by Inhuman Species, a 3D printed museum quality fossil replica of a 2-3 years old Tyrannosaurus rex. I really love this project and I made a video of the making from the 3D printing to the painting - I hope you like it. If you're wondering, I 3D printed the skull with the Alfawise U30 in PLA plastic; please watch the video and turn on subtitles to learn more about the tools and the making processes. If your're addicted or interested in 3D printing, you can't miss those topics:

Hi! After a long hiatus from fossil collecting, I've finally decided to start again! While searching online, I found this amazing specimen on online listed as a Mosasaur skull- I'm sure anyone could debunk that in seconds. I'm almost certain that this is actually the skull of a crocodile, but I want to be sure before I go ahead and purchase it. I'm also unsure of the authenticity of this fossil- for the cheap price it is at currently, it is a complete steal. Any input is appreciated. -conleys

Real Triceratops frill?
olorotitan posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Is this a genuine Triceratops frill fragment? It is from Hell Creek, MT. The seller has other frill pieces that look similar, along with other dino teeth. From what I've read in other posts, it sounds like presence of blood grooves confirm identity as a triceratops frill. I don't see overt grooves on the planar surface but I see evidence of a thin spongy bone layer in the cross section suggesting to me it is still bone of some sort. Thanks for any assistance.- 10 replies
