    ID?

Found this on myrtle beach this morning after heavy thunderstorms threw large debris all around the beach, I'm not sure what this is? It's attached to a large concretion.
  2. Hello, I was hunting for sharks' teeth around Venice Beach/Caspersen Beach last week, and along with finding a bunch of shark teeth, I found some other fossil-looking stones. I'm not sure what kind of fossils they are, or if they even are fossils, so I'd like some help identifying them! All of them are quite hard and most are fairly shiny. #1: It has a sort of "hole" or concavity in one end which you can see from the second photo. It also has a bit of a crack on the underside, as you can see from the last photo. #2: This one is fairly porous/pockmarked looking, and has grooved lines. The next looks pretty much the same as the previous one, but I thought I would include photos anyway. #3: Pretty much the same as the last one; porous. #4: This next one is very interesting to me; it has quite a few cracks and even has a hole all the way through! #5: I suspect that this one may be just a rock; pretty much the only characteristic that makes me think that it could be a fossil is the color. #6: I'm thinking that this one is probably a normal (albeit strange looking) rock too... #7: This one is a bit pockmarked/porous. If this one actually is a fossil, it seems like it would have to be pretty worn, since I don't really see any definite shape! Sorry, I know that was a TON of photos!! Thanks for the help!
  3. When trying to classify fossils where the species is unknown which do you use? For example is it Tyrannosaurus sp. or Tyrannosauridae indet.? Edit: Using Albertosaurus as an example, I now believe it is something like this. Since Albertosaurus is hard to differentiate from Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus any finds should be labelled 'Tyrannosauridae indet.', but if you could identify it as Albertosaurus and didn't know the species (sarcophagus etc.) it should be labelled 'Albertosaurus sp.' until the species is known.

    Unknown mazon help

Going through my collection, I've come back across some pieces that I am unsure of, some of them may not even be fossils, others I have an idea about but I'd like to hear the community's thoughts. 1 coprolite, plant, mineralization? 2 shrimp antennae or legs? 3 4 5 6 trace fossil or "H" 7 8 partial scallop? 9 coprolite, mineralization, worm? 10 11 I'm 95% sure it's plant but I want to make sure it's not tooth

    Mystery fossil tooth in matrix

Hello all I recently found this at a shop with really no information on it. I am in Texas, but not sure where this fossil tooth in matrix was found; or if it is even real. The matrix looks and feels a bit weird to me. The tooth itself is about 1-1/8" long with what looks to be a long root under the matrix it is on. What do you think? Any suggestions or info would be great! KP

    Fossil or inorganic

I've been told this could be something, fossil or inorganic. It was found in the same Mesozoic area as previous finds in the Big Sky, MT area. Just looking for some input pertaining to what it could be whether it's a rock or something more......

Two new finds that I need help with!

Hello everyone! Spring is almost here! Thank god. I don't think I could shovel my driveway one more time to be honest. Today was a beautiful day and so I ventured out to hike and do some exploring. We have had a bunch of flooding lately so my usual river hunting spots are underwater but I found an area south in the same river and I found some cool items. These are from the DuPage River, western suburbs of Chicago. Northern Illinois. I believe rock number one has a crinoid on one side and maybe a shell on the other? Hard to tell but I knew it was something as soon as I saw the circular object on top as I walked past it. The second item was right on the edge of the banks in the water. I saw the crack in it and hoped it had something inside it. I picked it up and it cracked open in my hand. It seems to be a worm. Maybe? Any guidance in this is greatly appreciated and I think you for your time! OBJECT #1:

    Not sure what this is

I was scrolling through our favourite auction site when I saw this for sale. The seller has no clue on what it is and has no info on where it is found, my friend says it looks like nothing but I want to know what it might be. All information would be helpful. Regards, Indominus rex

    Unknown object ~ any ideas?

Hello everyone! I hope the new year is treating everyone well. Here outside of Chicago, we are about to get hit with a huge snow storm. While this time of year is usually slow for getting outside and doing some searching for interesting finds, a warm day last week allowed for a few new items to be found. In the DuPage river just west of Chicago in Illinois I have been finding a great group of teeth some fossils and a few possible Native American cutting stones. The item I found last week though is quite strange. I have no idea what this could be after searching for over an hour online for similar type stones/fossils. The ridges are very odd to me as they are pretty much evenly spaced. Here are the photos. As always I greatly appreciate any feedback you all have and look forward to discusses this and maybe identifying it. Thank you!

    Don't know what this is

Can anyone tell me what this is. The story goes it was found in Eastern Montana. I think it is a fossilized vertebra but my friends think it is something else. It is about 3" in diameter. I tried to take photos of both sides. Sorry a couple of them are a bit blurry and it is a friend of mine who has the piece so I don't have it with me and can't retake. Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

    Benedini?

My friend has had this tooth for a while and it's from Antwerp Belgium. It is for sure not a mako, so what is it? All information would be helpful
  12. HI all, Were going through our cambrian material from the Upper Cambrian Abrigo formation from southern Arizona, and besides hordes of trilobite bits, we have found two similar calcified items in the limestones which we are not certain of. I think they are either plates from an eocrinoid, or sclerites from some sort of bottom dwelling crawly thing. Now we do very occasionally find stem ossicles here, very rare in the upper cambrian, but dont know if they are crinoid or other stemmed pelmatozoan. Here is the photos I just took, let me know your thoughts!

This is a shark tooth right?

I am just wondering, does this look like a broken shark tooth or is it possibly a reptile tooth? I have unfortunately no information on it.

    What jaw is this

I bought this fossil at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show and I was wondering what it was. It may have been a marine creature because these people had a lot of mosasaurus and shark teeth.

    A Few Interesting Little Pieces

I went through a bag of bits and pieces from a year or two ago last night and found a few I was curious about. Any thoughts? All found in Venice FL. #1

    Unknown, at least by me

posting this for a friend. Found in Charlotte, TN. Middle of state. Could be Ord, Sil, Dev, but my guess would be Silurian from the color of the matrix. Any ideas, it's got me stumped. LOOKS LIKE THE AGE IS MISSISSIPPIAN
  17. I got this when I was a little kid (~20 yrs ago) in a grab bag of rocks and fossils at a local museum's gift shop. Could've come from anywhere. As a kid I thought it was a fossil beetle pupa in petrified wood and cherished it. Now I'm a lot less sure. Completely clueless in fact. Can anyone narrow it down from my current knowledge of "a thingy inside a lump of stuff"? Thanks all. Been wondering about this one for years, and finally showed it to somebody who told me about this forum. -Jake
  18. I am at a 99% certainty that this is just a weathered annularia, but there is a very small percentage of my thinking that it might be the cephalopod, Jeletzkya douglassae. I know that J. douglassae has 10 arms and this concretion has 9 branching (leaves / arms?). I collected this 1/2 concretion years ago at Pit 4 (Shadow Lakes- Braidwood Flora / Fauna) What do you think @fiddlehead, @RCFossils?

    Unknown South Florida Fossil

I’ve been searching the internet for an ID on this fossil and have come up empty handed. I came across this forum and thought I’d check in with you all. Any ideas? About the size of a pencil eraser. Found on a beach in South FL alongside many ray and shark teeth. Might be nothing at all, I’m not experienced enough to say. Help appreciated!

    Ammonite

This is an ammonite i got in a bundle of fossils last year, they didnt say where they came from and what they were. Is this a Hildoceras?

    Tiny bubbles

I found these in the creek back in September, this is the only pic I took (just now happened upon it in my files) and I can't find them to retake pics. The largest rock, the black one in the right of the frame, is no bigger than 2" at it's widest measurement, if that helps. I'm just really curious about what would make these little bubble-like formations printed on a rock like this. Bubbles?

Cool rock or finally a fossil?

Again, it's small enough that pics are tricky to get with my phone. I've posted the interesting side, the side, and the flip side. What do you think?
  23. kerrimarie805

    Is this a bone?

I have no idea, but it's small enough that good pics have been tricky and my curiosity has gotten the better of me so I am posting what I have. Can you give it a guess?

    Geode?

The fossil I want most to find, at this point in my addiction, is a tullymonster. A few months ago, I thought this might be one, but, now, I'm fairly certain it's just a geode and am just double checking by asking for an ID. I actually really dig (that's so punny, lol!) geodes, so I'll add it to my collection, but I have enough criniods and brachiopods. I'm throwing a little tullymonster fit!
