Hello! I hope it's okay to post several photos. I will do front and back with letters to mark each one. These were found over the years in Virginia or Maryland. The possible parks in VA would have been Caledon, Westmoreland, and York River. I also frequented Purse State Park in Maryland. I'm sorry I don't recall where each are from. I just found this forum and am grateful for your help! I'm a beginner as far as knowledge goes and am eager to learn! I'm most interested in B and D. I think E may be fossilized wood?

Bone fragment found on the York River in Virginia. It is the Yorktown Formation, Pliocene epoch. I'm wondering if it is a vertebrae fragment, and what species it might belong to. It's convex on one side, and concave on the other.

Most of the vertebrae that I find are 1/4” in size. Found this 2” vertebrae near the York River State Park in Virginia. Any ideas on what it belonged to?

I found this shard of bone on the York River in the Yorktown formation, and the pattern on one side is curious. I’m wondering if anyone has seen this, or if it’s a diagnostic texture? Thanks for any help!

Hello all, I am going on a trip with the family down to Carmine's Island for recreation but figured while I'm there why not do some fossil hunting. I mean, it just makes the day better anytime. We know of a location called Felgates Creek, which is Pliocene. Good? Bad? Only about 29 minutes away from me. Can we just find stuff on the coastal beaches? Thanks

My wife's family reunion is taking place in Newport News, Va. next weekend. As always, when I travel, I like collecting a little bit of the "past" wherever I go. It sounds like the James and York rivers can provide some collecting possibilities. My concern is not to trespass. If anyone can enlighten me on how the shorelines of these rivers are dealt with, it will hopefully keep me out of trouble!!!! I did find this statement: In Virginia, the rivers, bays, creeks, ocean shores and their bottomlands are owned by the state and are legally presumed to be public lands unless they are proven to be subject to a special grant that predates commonwealth law. My understanding is that there are tides in these rivers. So is use by the public to high tide mark or just where the water is? In the past, when going on these family get-togethers, Forum members have always offered very helpful tidbits of advice that allow me to have success in the short few hours I have to explore. I am open to any suggestions regarding this trip too. Mike

Hello everyone. I am new to your site. Came across you all while doing a Google search to identify a find today. I am not an avid fossil hunter, just a beach comber. After spending sometime on Google and then searching several of your forum posts I have been unable to find an answer. Some friends think I have found a bone, others say fossilized coral. Here is what I can tell you: Found along the York River shoreline during low tide (west of the Coleman Bridge) Was not attached to anything but simply lying on top of the sand about 3-4' out from the marsh grass. It is heavy. btw: I did not know I picked up a shell with a living snail it - which attached itself to the barnacle during transport. You may be happy to know I returned it to the shoreline. Yes, I am one of those who puts spiders outside too instead of stomping on them as well. Sorry about the hand pics. Noticed you all recommend not including hands for scale purposes (after taking said pics). Thank you in advance for any insight you may provide!

Anyone have any good recommendations on a good coastal spot that produces decent teeth around OBX,NC to Surry County? I'm not looking for your secret spot, but a general area that has a decent chance to produce a few nice teeth over a day of fossil hunting. GMR was what I was originally planning, but the Tar River level is probably going to push flood stages over the next several hours. My kids are pretty anxious and I don't want to disappoint. Any help would be great.

Wanted to say hello from Virginia down near the York River, been collecting down here for a little over a year. Usually walk the York and James Rivers. Went out today after the storms we've had come through and found a ton of ecphora, actually found the largest one I've ever found. I also found my very first shark tooth. I have found the other posts very interesting and will start placing my finds on here as well. Thanks
