I'm going to be making a trip to the Waco Pit this weekend, and I'm hoping to find some pyritized ammonites. If I get lucky and find some, can I use butvar to help preserve them? Also, is there any way to shine them up just a bit? I know a harsh polishing scrub would damage them, but what about something like a toothbrush to get them clean?

Hey everyone, I'm looking for trip suggestions for this December. My wife and I recently had a little time free up and we have flight/hotel points to redeem. We'd prefer somewhere that's not super cold (we're from Colorado) but something that also has some fun things to do besides collecting, like hiking or exploring. I've been considering trips to NC, SC, or the Peace River. I'd love to hear from anyone who would have some suggestions for places where we can vacation and I can get out for a few afternoons to look for cool specimens. I'd be particularly interested in fish/shark tooth locations, but invertebrates would also be cool (especially ammonites, trilobites, etc). Let me know what you guys think - any suggestion is appreciated!

Last Saturday I was invited to a collecting trip by a buddy of mine. It took us to the Tyrolian part of the Northern calcareous Alps. We worked at a condensed layer that contains a big part of the Jurassic, Hettangian stage(marine ammonoid zones of the Hettangian). Several ammonoid zones are given within this layer. It ranges from the upper Hettangian(the yellow/orange colored top of the layer) down to the grey limestone of the panorbis zone. We were lucky because our gained block from the layer was full of ammonoids. It was kept as it was by my friend. I kept a smaller block which was laterally beside it. Good Morning! My wife and kids are spending a few days on the Texas side of Lake Texoma (Gordonville, Texas). Are there any places nearby that might yield a few of the famous ammonites from this region? Thanks in advance, Daniel

I would like to get some fossils to seed some areas for both my sons to find some interesting things and to better learn the diversity of what is out there. I was thinking shark teeth , ammonites and trilobites stuff like that can any one help with this. I could ether trade or buy doesn't matter I'm just looking for a variety of stuff.

Two Pleuroceras ammonites that popped out of some concretion material

I recently found this pair of Pleuroceras ammonites when splitting some concretion material I brought back from Buttenheim in Bavaria, Germany which I visited last May. From the Pliensbachian Spinatum Zone, Lower Jurassic. Hi, I have these two same sized Hildoceras, I'm thinking one is a Juvenile as can see the mouth border and one is a large one that has broken, would this be correct and would you say both specimens are the same ? Thanks.

Hello, I was stopping through Indianapolis and gave their children's museum a try. It was surprisingly enjoyable! The museum covered topics from agriculture to racing to dinosaurs! These photos are from the dinosaur section. I followed the signs to the Dinosphere. I walked through the entrance and down the ramp. At the end of the ramp was a Sarcosuchus cast (no picture sorry). Following the path I emerged into a huge planetarium like structure filled with dinosaurs.

Hi, stumbled on this with the kids. We are all curious as to what it could have been, of anything at all. Really know nothing at all and probably sound silly, but best guess is ammonites? Or is it something completely different, if ever organic? Thanks in advance James

Here's another site you might want to try. If you've ever seen Ralph's MAPS collection this is one of the places where you can find some really big Ammonites. If you look in the boulders at the old dam by Tinton Ave. you can find some , but you are going to have to hammer them out. If you go upstream and look in the riffles and gravel bars sometimes you can find them just laying around. There are gravel bars and riffles all the way up to Hockhockson Rd., but getting to them can be difficult. I'll post more sites as I remember(I've had some strokes so my memory can be difficult) so all can enjoy. Good luck looking and if you like to fish the stream is trout stocked. I forgot to mention this site is in Tinton Falls NJ.

What do you think about it, especially in relation with the branching coral ? Thanks

Last weekend, @BobWill was nice enough to take a bunch of us out for some ammonite collecting in the Lower Cretaceous Duck Creek Formation. We had received 3" of rain the day before so the water was a little high. That didn't stop the ammonites from showing up for the event. There were 8 of us and everyone found more ammonites than they wanted to carry. I wound up schlepping a 15" Eopachydiscus 2 miles through the creek to get it back to the truck! Thankfully, the largest Eo of the day at a VERY heavy 18" diameter was found only 200 yards from the truck. My find of the day came in the smallest possible form. I believe to be in the possession of an Eopachydiscus protoconch. Once I prep it, I'll know for sure. I'll post some photos here eventually, but I have one specifically for @JohnBrewer as we all know how much he loves kilts. This kilt has has seen over 50 nights of camping and multiple fossil collecting trips and hiking trips.
