Hi everyone, now that it is a prohibitive time for fossil hunting (at least where I am!) I though it was a good opportunity for a little throwback. This summer I travelled to southern France and I had the chance to visit museums, paleontological heritage sites and, of course, collect fossils. Towards the end of August I met with a friend and we headed to an area that was quite popular among professionals and amateur collectors alike, but we didn't know any exact location. We stopped at a place that looked promising and we asked the owner of the land permission to survey and, potentially, collect. And we were very lucky indeed! Note that I cannot pinpoint the spot to you, because the owner asked not to disclose it. Here's a picture of the outcrop at the end of the day. It was a 1.5 m (5 ft) thick bed of grey marls with limestone interbeds, Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous) in age. As I am chiefly interested in the scientific aspect of collecting, I managed to record bed-by-bed stratigraphy and fossil occurences. I drew a few sketches and a log, so that no info will be lost. We found a lot of material. Large inoceramid bivalves (not pictured) were very abundant. Ammonites were relatively common, but very fragile and most of the time fragmented. We did find however a few complete ones. Here's the first find of the day. This large boulder was detached and, in hitting it with the hammer, this ammonite popped out undamaged: This was the largest specimen, before and after collecting: Another very delicate specimen, it may need a bit of prepping: And, finally, one of the most interesting find, a heteromorph ammonite, still to prep: In conclusion, I hope you enjoyed my post and my finds. Fossils from the middle and upper Santonian of Gelsenkirchen / NW-Germany

In 1995 (long ago...) a friend of mine and me digged at a highway-constructionsite in nw-germany. It was the Highway Nr. 2 between Gelsenkirchen and Gladbeck in famous Ruhrgebiet-Area. The construction site opens at a lenght of 3 km sandy sediments from middle Santonian, Zone of Uintacrinus socialis. We really found a lot..., beach sediments with everything from plants over echinoderms up to vertebrate fossils (some lang-living ones...), and stored it. Till now. Some weeks ago I started to clean, glue, sort..., to write a paper about it. Hope to finish in 2025, lot of work... I go to show piece by piece fossils from this site, might be one a day, might be one a week. depends. Start is a nice Cretalamna appendiculata, approx. 2 cm long, root is a little bit damaged.

North Texas (ammonites, etc) - Anyone want to meet up?

I'm considering traveling to Texas as my kids REALLY have the fossil bug right now. I am thinking to hit sites in northern TX near lake Texoma and north sulfur river area, as they want to find ammonites. I am sure I can find decent sites on my own, but if anyone in the area has suggestions, or wants to meet up to collect somewhere, shoot me a note. It would be somewhat a one time trip for us, since we live in South Carolina, and I want to make it worthwhile for them. And, I could certainly provide some reciprocal intel / guidance on SC collecting sites (Summerville/Charleston) where I have done extensive collecting. Thanks, Steve -

I strolled around Lake Texoma today. I mainly was looking for a chunky ammonite to take home, and I knew I was in for some serious work if I wanted to find a nice one. While walking to the ammonite beach, I picked through some marl banks and found a couple cool keepers. The pyritized small ammonites were plentiful, so I picked a few, while the shark teeth were not. Only found one. Looks like Cretalamna sp? I did manage to find a pretty nice echinoid that the water had cleaned perfectly. Hemiaster sp? Unfortunately the ammonite beach wasn't what I had hoped for. I'm not sure if I picked a bad time to go, or if it's just too popular but all the rock I could find was pretty much smashed to pieces along with many big ammonites. It took a long time to find a potential keeper. I did manage to find one, and man it was a lot of work to pry this out. This ammonite is over a foot long and was very heavy to haul back to my car. Needless to say, I took frequent breaks on my way back! On the journey back to my car, I did find a nicer complete ammonite exposed. It was the only one that day I found that was nice that didn't require extensive excavation, so I decided to take it home too. All in all, I had a pretty nice time at the lake. It was a lot more work and walking than I expected.

Hi, all, my seven year old has recently got the fossil bug. We live in Budapest. Does anyone know of any sites we can visit to hunt for fossils, please?
